The students at Joyce are involved with an organization called Licensed to Learn, a not-for-profit organization that encourages Grade 5 and 6 students to peer tutor other students in mathematics and language. Tutors undergo training where they learn about the different ways that students learn. They use this knowledge when working with their assigned student so that their support is customized to meet the learning profile of that student.

This program benefits both the peers and the tutors.  The peers receive one-on-one time to focus and practise their math and literacy skills, while the tutors improve their communication and interpersonal communication skills.

This program is run by past and present teachers of Joyce PS. Classroom teachers nominate students from grades 1-3 to be tutored every Monday at lunch for 15 weeks.
