Student, Teacher and Parent RIghts and Responsibilities

GENERAL STUDENT BEHAVIOUR

The Ministry of Education states that the major purpose of a school is to help each student develop his/her potential as an individual and as a contributing member of society, who will think clearly, feel deeply and act wisely. The achievement of this goal is the shared responsibility of students, teachers and parents.

RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND PARENTS:

STUDENT RIGHTS

Students have the right to:

  • a meaningful education with suitable and challenging courses with appropriate preparation for evaluation
  • guidance in making career and programme decisions
  • a pleasant, positive school atmosphere
  • participate in school activities
  • be disciplined in a firm and fair way, and be treated by all staff with respect and dignity

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Students have the responsibility to:

  • be punctual and regular in attendance
  • work diligently and co-operatively to meet the requirements of courses and to be responsible for all work missed when absent from class
  • show respect and courtesy to all staff, students and parents
  • respect the property of others
  • not disrupt anyone’s education
  • obey all school rules
  • behave in such a way as to show pride in and bring credit to the school and the community.

 

TEACHER RIGHTS

Teachers have the right to:

  • expect reasonable behaviour from all students when at school, or any school function
  • support from the Principal and Vice Principal in doing their job
  • co-operation from all students
  • refer to the Principal or a Vice Principal any student who misbehaves or who is not trying to learn
  • be treated with respect and dignity.

TEACHER RESPONSIBILITIES

Teachers have the responsibility to:

  • report student progress and conduct to the school’s administration
  • in a timely manner
  • assist students to learn in class and after class
  • enforce school rules fairly and consistently
  • ensure the rights of students
  • provide appropriate instruction
  • act as a kind, firm and fair parent
  • report academic or behaviour concerns to parents and guardians
  • encourage behaviour which shows pride in school and themselves
  • treat students with respect and dignity.
     

PARENT RIGHTS

Parents have the right to:

  • fast and easy access to information that will help them to support their children
  • expect reasonable behaviour from students when at school
  • receive regular communication from the school
  • discuss any concern for their child/children with the school
  • be informed of any serious behaviour or academic problems
  • be treated with respect and dignity.

 PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Parents have the responsibility to:

  • insure regular and punctual attendance of their child/children
  • ensure correct address and phone numbers (also emergency contacts) are on file with the school
  • co-operate with the school to develop positive attitudes
  • be interested in, and discuss their student’s progress and involvement at school
  • provide time and a place for school work to be done at home
  • encourage their children to behave in a manner which brings pride and credit to the school and allows them to achieve academic success.
