Student Leadership Clubs

Student Leadership Opportunities

Martingrove Collegiate Institute offers several opportunities for students to develop interpersonal and leadership skills through both the curricular and co-curricular programs. Students are provided with the opportunity to build self-confidence, to improve community skills, and to meet new people. Students will be credited with hours towards their mandatory Community Service. Leadership experiences on a student’s resume have proven useful in gaining acceptance to many programs in post-secondary education institutions. Please attend Club Carousel in September to see the full list of MCI Clubs and Organizations. GET INVOLVED!

School Organizational Activities

There are many clubs and organizations that operate at MCI. All students are encouraged to participate and take advantage of the opportunities that they offer. The largest clubs and organizations include the following:

The Students’ Administrative Council (SAC)

The SAC is the voice of the student body and the liaison between the students and the staff/administration. If you have any ideas/concerns or questions, the SAC is at your disposal, don’t pass us up! The SAC also co-ordinates some of the biggest events on the Martingrove calendar, such as: The Grade 9 Moving on Up, Carnival, Semi-Formal and Formal.

Peer Tutors

These students assist other students to be successful in their academic program. Senior students who demonstrate high achievement in a subject area can develop their skills and can experience the role of teacher and coach by helping another student to earn credits or improve his or her performance in the classroom. The time committed by each tutor is flexible to suit individual timetables. Contact a counsellor for information.

Art Club

This is a student-led club where members interested in Art and art making join together to create projects to better the aesthetic appeal of the school environment, and develop engaging art/craft projects.

Bear Air

If you are interested in becoming a driving force in your school then this club is definitely for you. The ESP program (Empowered Students Partnership) is an excellent ‘safe school’ initiative that is being actively run in many schools across the city. Students who join this club do so because of their enthusiasm and desire to make MCI a safer school. Membership in this club may enable you to participate in a variety of activities including camps, forums and video productions. ESP–students taking control!

Martingrove GSA (Gay/Straight Alliance/Genders and Sexuality Alliance)

The Martingrove GSA is a student-run group that proves a safe place for any and all students to meet and learn about all different genders and orientations, to support each other while working together to end homophobia, and to raise awareness and promote equality for all human beings. In addition to being a group dedicated to support, it also strives to educate the community about different gender and equality issues. Our lunchtime meetings proved a positive             space for students to meet and spend time in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Whether you’re LGBTQ or not, you can be a part of making MCI safer and friendlier for everyone.

Leadership Council

Martingrove has introduced a new leadership model which will be one of the highlights of many students’ high school career. The week-long camp at Camp Manitou is designed to help Grade 10 students build their leadership potential. Make leadership a part of your secondary school experience! The Martingrove Beacon Founded in 2002, the Beacon is a news magazine operated entirely by MCI students. Its aim is to provide Martingrove with well - rounded and reliable coverage of current events, both in and outside the school, and of issues directly and even indirectly related to MCI students.
