Masking in TDSB

Information about masking was shared with TDSB staff and families last week.

Earlier this week, Dr. Kieran Moore, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health said he “strongly recommends” wearing a mask in indoor public spaces. Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam is also advising Canadians to continue wearing a mask, while Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health, said she still recommends the use of masks indoors, especially amid an increase in COVID-19 cases.

While the TDSB takes its direction from the province, which does not require masks, given the increase in COVID-19 cases and the high number of absences, we as a system, are asking that all staff and students wear a well fitting mask when indoors in TDSB schools and buildings to limit the spread of COVID-19 and help minimize disruption from COVID-related absences. To be clear, this remains a personal decision.

We will continue to have masks available for our students to wear in school.

Return from March Break

We look forward to welcoming students and staff back after March Break. Last week, families received an email from the TDSB about changes that will take place in schools beginning on March 21, 2022. Below are some highlights. For the full TDSB message, visit Ministry Directive on COVID-19.

Revised Health Screening

Toronto Public Health has updated its screening for children/students/adults to align with the new direction from the Chief Medical Officer of Health. Please do a daily self-assessment before coming to school and follow the isolation guidelines and other requirements, such as masking, as necessary. As of Monday, your child does not need to show the Health Paper Pass.

Masking

As of March 21, masks will be strongly encouraged in TDSB schools, though not required, except in the following circumstances:

  • For days 6-10 after a self-isolation period of five days after a COVD-19 diagnosis.
  • If you are identified as a close contact of someone with COVID-19.
  • In public spaces, including schools and childcares, for the first 14 days following travel outside of Canada.

Our school will continue to be mask-friendly environments. Masks will still be available to both staff and students upon request. Classroom environments will be inclusive of all students.

Cohorting and Physical Distancing

With the lifting of cohorting and physical distancing requirements, students may now sit, work and play together. Some activities such as new recess routines, extracurriculars and events, require a thoughtful, phased-in approach, as well as staff support. Please be patient as we work to implement changes in our school.

As classes can now combine, moving forward, when busses are canceled as a result of severe weather, our school will remain open.

Thank you for your continued patience and support.

March Break

As a reminder, our March Break will be from Monday, March 14 to Friday, March 18. There will be no school for students and staff. Have a great holiday!
