Code of Conduct

                                    WEST HUMBER PHILOSOPHY FOR LEARNING:
                  Safety for All. Be Respectful. Be a Responsible Citizen. Promote a Positive School Climate.

RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF STUDENTS:

West Humber Students are expected to:
  • learn in an environment free from discrimination and harassment based on race, gender, religion, ethnic origin and sexual orientation
  • embrace and embody the spirit of the Future Ace Creed
  • attend school regularly, on time and be prepared for learning
  • complete and submit assignments on time and to the best of their ability
  • demonstrate honesty and integrity
  • respect differences in people, their ideas and opinions
  • show proper care and regard for school property and the property of others and their personal space (e.g. lockers, textbooks, walls, washrooms, etc.)
  • use polite language - free from swearing, insults, discrimination or threats
  • respect the rights and feelings of others including anyone in a position of authority
  • celebrate student success, appropriate behaviour and individuality
  • report any threats, violence, bullying, (anything that affects school climate)
  • turn off all cell phones and other electronic devices and store them out of view when on school property 

CELEBRATING STUDENT SUCCESS AND APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR

At West Humber, we celebrate student success and appropriate behaviour through:
  • Future Aces Assemblies
  • Positive communication with Parents
  • Opportunities for student leadership and additional responsibility
  • Displays of student work
  • Special Celebrations 

At West Humber inappropriate student behaviour is dealt with through interventions, supports and consequences such as:

  • Teacher-pupil discussion
  • Contracts (performance / behaviour/ attendance)
  • Documentation of behaviour
  • Peer Mediation
  • Mentorship
  • Individual or Group Counselling
  • Parent-teacher communication
  • Loss of in-school privileges
  • Removal from extra-curricular activities
  • Temporary withdrawal from class
  • Community Service
  • Detention
  • Formal suspension for up to 20 days
  • Expulsion (Mandated by Ministry of Education - Safe Schools Act) 

Responsibilities of Parent(s) / Caregiver(s)

Parents and Caregivers are expected to:
  • Encourage their children to show respect to others
  • Support and reinforce the school code of conduct
  • Actively support students academically – (e.g. helping with homework and checking agenda)
  • Make appointments if you want to contact teachers
  • Always stop at the office and sign in when visiting
  • Maintain communication with the school and provide up-to-date records
  • Ensure that children attend school on time, regularly and follow the dress code 

Responsibility of School Personnel

School personnel are expected to:
  • Teach, review, implement, and follow the code of conduct
  • Respect and treat others equitably
  • Celebrate positive behaviour
  • Create an environment that is emotionally and physically safe, trusting and with clearly-communicated expectations
  • Encourage students to achieve their maximum potential and develop self-worth
  • Maintain communications with students, parents and staff 


WEST HUMBER’S POLICY ON BULLYING PREVENTION
GOAL:

To create a school environment that is safe for students both
physically and psychologically, by:

1.Stopping the behaviour - Bullying prevention will be enforced by ALL staff
members. All staff will employ a direct, clear and firm approach for unacceptable
behaviour with an emphasis on problem solving and student accountability. Staff will
use behaviour and classroom management practices, which are consistent with our
aims of bullying prevention.

2. Students taking positive action -Students will help each other deal with bullying in
an appropriate manner. Students, who are being bullied or know of someone being
bullied, will immediately report it to a staff member.

3. Staff and students providing an inclusive environment where everyone values cooperation
and understanding.

4. Developing an emphasis on equity and anti-bias education to create a caring and
supportive community within the school.
