Teacher-Librarian - Raman Sarai

The
Westwood Learning Commons and Library is a place where students can read, work
with technology, conduct research and complete homework.
Our teacher-librarian, Ms. Sarai conducts book exchanges with classes that
start with an introduction to the Dewey Decimal. Furthermore, classroom
teachers partner with Ms. Sarai to team-teach various units that involve
research skills, organization, note-taking, book talks, technology and
more.
The Learning Commons offers a variety of non-fiction and fiction texts for
students to read for pleasure or educational purposes. Furthermore, with the
increased use of technology, students have access to ebooks through the school
library website. Students have access to over 30 computers in the library and
an interactive whiteboard. Student will also get an opportunity to try
out makerspaces and build with lego, recycled materials, Scratch (coding
software) and much much more!

Our Virtual
Library has amazing resources for researching, ebooks, places to play and
create!

Throughout the school year there are many activities in the Learning Commons.
Every year, usually in November, the Scholastic Book Fair comes to Westwood. It
is a great way for students to see the newest books and a fun way to promote
reading and fundraise for the Learning Commons. Last year over $700 was raised.
Every Wednesday at lunch the Learning Commons Crew assist in the
Learning Commons and help keep everything running smoothly. They organize and
re-shelve books and get a first look at new books purchased for the Learning
Commons. The Learning Commons Crew goal is to put their stamp and vision on the
Learning Commons.
Last but
not least, the Forest of Reading Club runs in December until May. Students read
books by Canadian authors and discuss the various books and vote on their
favourite book. If you child loves to read, tell them to join the book club
every Friday at lunch.
The Learning Commons is the hub of the school and interesting activities are always happening!
