Black Student Excellence at Willow Park

Willow Park is committed to the achievement of all students.  We are fortunate to be a part of TDSB and Ministry of Education initiatives that provide support and foster academic excellence for Black Students.

Our Inquiry: What happens when we provide opportunities for Black students to explore future aspirations and goal setting as they focus on who they are, including their racial identity and their intersectionalities of identities?

A sample of some of the things happening at Willow Park:

Engaging Parents, Elders, Families and Community

The Reading Partnership for Black Families: A joint venture between The Reading Partnership and Willow Park to work with children ages 4-6 and their parents to empower parents and caregivers with the tools to teach their children how to read.  It is grounded in the diverse cultures of Black families.

Black African Museum: A Celebration of Human Innovation - Visited the school and showcased the accomplishments of Black inventors

Career Presentations from Community Members from all walks of life sharing their journey with our students.

Environment as a Third Teacher

Lantern Project - Partnering with artists from the Cedar Ridge Creative centre to photograph buildings in the community and create lanterns that will represent the community to be used at a lantern festival in the summer, then permanently displayed at Willow Park in the fall.

I Am Project - Students will create a fence post decorated with images and words that represent who they are and who they would like to be.  The fence posts will be installed and displayed at the school.

Student Voice

Students and staff are engaged in learning that promotes student voice and provides students with an opportunity to express themselves and see themselves reflected in the curriculum and the school environment.
