TDSB Launches Refugee Crisis Fundraising Appeal
Today, the Toronto District School Board launched tdsbCARES: Refugee Crisis Appeal — a board-wide fundraising appeal to help with the relief effort amid the growing refugee crisis in the Middle East and Europe.
With hundreds of thousands of people affected, the TDSB is actively supporting the Canadian Red Cross, which, together with their Red Cross Movement partners, already has teams on the ground providing assistance.
As the need is great, the Board is encouraging its 250,000 students and more than 36,000 staff to take part in fundraising efforts where possible. Donations, which will be matched by the Government of Canada, will be accepted until December 11, 2015.
For those wishing to donate, please visit the TDSB website at www.tdsb.on.ca
A letter will be going home with students informing them of this appeal with more information on how to donate.
Since the start of this year, it is estimated that more than 350,000 refugees and migrants have entered Europe to escape war and hunger in countries such as Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq, among others.
For every eligible donation made by individual Canadians to registered Canadian charities between September 2 and December 31, the Government of Canada will contribute an equivalent amount (up to $100 million) to its own Syria Emergency Relief Fund.
“The TDSB is committed to demonstrating the values of compassion and caring. When global issues result in crises of international scale involving human dislocation and suffering, we have an obligation within our school communities to reach out globally and help. In so doing, we teach our students their responsibilities as global citizens."
