Investigation of Community, Belonging, and Identity
1/2C
is engaging in a cross-curricular investigation of community, belonging, and
identity. Through the use of rich mentor texts, technology, and collaboration
students are investigating their community. First, we looked at pictures from
our community, discussed and wrote about our favourite places, and represented
our writing with loose parts. Then we read the book, Sisters From the 6ix, and
looked at the different roles people within our community hold. Then students
worked in small groups to fill in a Frayer Model Chart about the people and
places and activities within Regent Park.
Students
then engaged in a discussion about challenges in the community. We took a
community walk with iPads to document different challenges we see. Students
documented positive challenges like the monkey bars and choosing a book from
the Book Bank. Students also noticed negative challenges such as; littering, a
lack of bike racks, cigarettes in planters and have been thinking of creative
solutions to these problems.
Now
the 1/2s are working on turning their documentation into an interactive
presentation. We’re excited to see where this investigation takes us.
Daily Announcements
Each
morning at 9:20 AM we have our daily announcements. At that time we listen to
the Land Acknowledgement, O Canada, Allyship Pledge and information related to
the Days of Significance and Heritage Months. This is followed by announcements
about what is happening in the school such as clubs and sports. Click on the link
and you can read the same announcements that are shared each day with our
students.

Important
Measles Update from Toronto Public Health
The
COVID-19 pandemic disrupted routine vaccinations, leading to an increase in
measles cases globally. Cases have also been detected here in Toronto. Measles
is a very contagious disease that spreads easily through the air or touching
contaminated surfaces.
If a measles case is identified at school, undervaccinated/unvaccinated staff
and students (without documented immunity) may be excluded for 21 days to
prevent further spread of the virus. This highlights the importance of ensuring
your and your child’s measles vaccinations are up-to-date to protect them and the
school community.
