There are a number of students in our school who suffer from life-threatening allergies to peanut and/or nut-related products. To this end, Balmy Beach maintains a NUT-FREE building and grounds.
We ask that you do not send in products that contain nuts, especially into the lunchroom and/or a classroom where there may be a student that can have an anaphylactic reaction. Please take the time to read labels and purchase only pre-packaged items that are clearly labeled "peanut free" and "tree nut free". The safety of our students and staff depends on your cooperation and diligence.
Other steps that may assist in the prevention of a reaction are:
- Having your children wash their hands and teeth if consuming peanuts/nuts before coming to school;
- Sending in small treats like stickers – instead of food – to celebrate birthdays;
- Teaching your children to read labels at the grocery store, and;
- Talking to your children about avoiding sharing food, and refraining from teasing a student with a food allergy.
If you are a parent of an anaphylactic child, please come into the office each September to update the necessary medical paperwork and provide an updated epi-pen if necessary.
By following these procedures and policies, we can help all children feel safe coming to school. Thank you.
