Google Translate Limitations Disclaimer

The electronic translation service on the Toronto District School Board website is hosted by Google Translate, a third party service. The TDSB does not guarantee or warrant the reliability, accuracy or completeness of any translated information.

The quality of the translation will vary in some of the languages offered by Google. Google Translate is a free service and currently offers translation in over 100 languages, but does not capture all languages or dialects.

The basic translation goal is to capture the general intention of the original English material. Before you act on translated information, we encourage you to confirm any facts that are important to you or may affect any decisions you make.

The Toronto District School Board is committed to equity and community engagement, and by providing this tool, we are making our information more accessible to families whose first language is not English.

Graduation Requirements

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)

Students working toward an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) must complete the provincial graduation requirements outlined below.

Graduation Requirements

To earn an OSSD, students must successfully complete:

Ontario secondary school literacy requirement

18 Compulsory Credits

English — 4 credits

Students require one English credit in each grade.

For English language learners, up to three credits may be earned through English as a Second Language (ESL) or English Literacy Development (ELD). The fourth must be a Grade 12 compulsory English credit.

The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC) may be used to satisfy either the Grade 11 or Grade 12 English compulsory credit requirement.

Mathematics — 3 credits

At least one mathematics credit must be at the Grade 11 or 12 level .

Science 2 credits

Arts 1 credit

Canadian Geography 1 credit

Grade 9 Canadian Geography

Canadian History 1 credit

Grade 10 Canadian History

French as a Second Language 1 credit

Health and Physical Education 1 credit

Career Studies 0.5 credit

Civics 0.5 credit

Additional Compulsory Credits — 3 Credits

Students must earn one credit from each of the following three groups :

Group 1

English, French as a Second Language, classical or international languages, Native languages, Canadian and world studies, Native studies, social sciences and humanities, guidance and career education, or cooperative education.

Group 2

French as a Second Language, the arts, business studies, health and physical education, or cooperative education.

Group 3

French as a Second Language, Grade 11 or 12 science, computer studies, technological education, or cooperative education.

Important: Limits apply to the number of French as a Second Language and cooperative education credits that can be counted as additional compulsory credits. Students should speak with EdVance Student Services when planning their graduation requirements.

Graduation Requirement

Community Involvement

Students must complete a minimum of 40 hours of community involvement before graduation . Once the requirement has been completed and submitted, it will be recorded on the student's Ontario Student Transcript.

Students are responsible for selecting and completing eligible activities. Activities should be approved in advance when required and must meet TDSB community involvement guidelines.

Graduation Requirement

Ontario Secondary School Literacy Requirement

Students must satisfy the Ontario secondary school literacy requirement as part of the requirements for an OSSD.

Students normally write the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) . Students who have been unsuccessful on the OSSLT at least once may be eligible to complete the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OLC4O) .
