Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to our school website and to another year of learning and growth for students.  Crestview is a K-5 school with 430 students and approximately 50 staff, located in Ward 13.  Many Crestview students live in the surrounding neighbourhood, but approximately 32% of our students are bussed daily to school from large condo developments located about 6 km away. Approximately 75% of our students have a first language other than English and approximately half of our students have been in Canada fewer than 5 years.  Crestview hosts both a Farsi speaking and Cantonese/Mandarin speaking Settlement Worker to assist newcomer families with navigating the educational system and other settlement needs.

As we do every year, this year we will be focusing on school improvement goals that support students to succeed and meet their full potential.  There are 3 areas of focus:

Human Rights and Equity

All students will have an equal opportunity to succeed, thrive, and reach their full potential. This requires boards to address systemic discrimination and eliminate disparities in educational experiences for students who are underserved by the education system, revealed by the collection and analysis of demographic data.

CRESTVIEW THEORY OF ACTION (GOAL): If our staff recognize and promote anti-racist teaching strategies and practices within school, and show evidence of efforts to embed change in everyday planning, teaching, and assessment, then students will develop a greater sense of belonging and engagement, leading to an overall increase in achievement and well-being.

Achievement (Language)

All students, including those communities of students who - historically and currently - are underserved, will be given the tools to succeed academically and in life.

CRESTVIEW THEORY OF ACTION (GOAL): If teachers create literacy rich environments reflective of students lived experiences and identities and engage in comprehensive literacy practices and tiered intervention strategies for primary students assessed as reading below expected DRA levels, then overall student achievement (reading at expected level) will increase to 75%, as measured by DRA levels and increased engagement.

Mental Health, Well-Being and Engagement

All students will be supported to improve mental health, well-being and engagement, which requires boards to foster a sense of belonging and a positive school environment and provide students with the appropriate, timely and quality school-based mental health supports, using a tiered approach to intervention.

CRESTVIEW THEORY OF ACTION (GOAL): If we intentionally use SEL tasks, activities and resources in grades K-5 through direct teaching and collaborative opportunities, then students will gain skills and strategies to promote a positive sense of self, of identity, of risk-taking and resilience, leading to improved self-regulation, coping skills, social skills, and overall mental health and wellbeing.
