Student Absence (Safe Arrival Program)
Students are expected to attend school regularly. When your child is unable to attend, please call the Safe Arrivals number at 1-833-250-2290.
When the child returns to school, please send the teacher a note, stating the number of days of the child’s absence and the reason for the absence. The note should be clearly dated and signed by a parent or guardian.
If a child does not arrive at school, and the parent has not notified the school of the absence, parents or guardians will be called at home or work via our automated telephone system.
It is imperative that the school has CURRENT Contact Telephone Numbers for ALL Emergency Contacts.
If a child is too sick to go out for recess or lunch, the child is too sick to be at school.
Student Lates
We believe it is very important to make punctuality a habit. Children are considered late if they arrive in the classroom after 8:30 a.m. in the morning, or after 12:35 p.m. in the afternoon. If a student arrives after 9:00 a.m., he/she must get a late slip from the office.
A student who is late on an ongoing basis will be referred to the administration; 15 times late and a letter is sent home indicating that an attendance counsellor will be notified.
School Entry
Students need to use designated doors only.
Only bussed students will enter through the front doors. However, if the bus arrives before entry time (8:55 a.m.) then these students need to proceed to the school yard and enter the school through the yard. In this situation, only kindergarten students will enter by the front doors.
Parents/Guardians and older siblings are NOT to wait for their child in the hallway. All parents/guardians must wait for students outside the exit doors. All staff must work together to have this policy consistently enforced. Parents will be redirected to the schoolyard to meet their child by the designated doors.
An adult or a responsible older child must accompany kindergarten children to and from their classes.
Visitors to the School
Parents/Guardians are always welcome to visit Derrydown Public School. In the interest of the safety of all students, we ask that parents and former students visiting at times other than open invitations and picking up of kindergarten children please report to the office.
We ask that parents/guardians picking up Grade 1 - 5 students wait for them outside of the building rather than at their classroom door.
