Dixon Grove Re-Imagined

DIXON GROVE REIMAGINED

Remote Learning at Dixon Grove

Dixon Grove staff is very excited and looking forward to being connected and engaged with their students to guide their learning.  We understand that many students may have been staying up late and thus waking up late as well. This next step of online learning with their teachers will be an adjustment for them.  We are suggesting to return to regular bedtimes and wake up times to attend to their learning and connect with their teachers. We are hopeful that learning, with accountability to their teachers, will bring about some normalcy and structure for our students.

It has definitely been challenging times for us all.  Staff has endeavoured to create expectations of our students that are reasonable and will ensure the continuity of learning to enable students to successfully complete the school year. Please see below for guidelines in terms of the suggested hours of work per student per week, areas of curriculum focus, as well as the role that teachers, students and parents/guardians can play in ensuring the continuity of learning...

Grade Range Hours of Work and Curriculum Focus

Kindergarten to Grade 3  5 hours per student per week - Focus: Literacy and Math
Grades 4 to 6   5 hours per student per week - Focus: Literacy, Math, Science and Social Studies
Grades 7 and 8 10 hours per student per week - Focus: Core Math, Literacy, Science and Social Studies

Teachers’ Role

  • Teachers will be preparing and assigning work for our students in the focus subjects listed above as well as integrating other subject areas (e.g. arts, physical education)
  • As much as possible, teachers will be integrating curriculum subjects, for example Social Studies with Literacy
  • Teachers will be connecting with our students daily by being available, guiding and responding to our students' learning needs by addressing questions, providing clarification, teaching or reviewing concepts, and providing descriptive feedback of the work being completed
  • Ongoing feedback on our students' learning will be the emphasis

Students’ Role

  • Students are expected to be engaged in their learning daily
  • Students are expected to complete the approximate hours of work assigned to them
  • Students are expected to connect with our teachers by email, Google classrooms, Google chats, etc. for questions, clarification, and inquiries for their learning
  • Students are expected to respond to their teachers' descriptive feedback by making corrections, revising their work, adding detail or missing information and/or redoing work as needed
  • Students are expected to submit their assignments/homework as directed by their teachers

Parent(s) Role

  • Please encourage your child to start sleeping earlier and getting up earlier
  • Please encourage your child to engage in their online learning expectations
  • Our staff will be contacting you if we do not see that your child is engaging in the learning provided and your support would be appreciated. We, however, also understand that these are challenging times, so communication with you is critical for us to understand the needs and understand how best to support.

Accessing Google Classroom from your Phone, Xbox or Playstation

Quite a few of our teachers will be using Google Classroom as a platform to connect with students, post and receive assignments, as well as grade students' work.  The following link provides a way that you can access google classroom from a phone, Xbox or Playstation: https://edtechawesomeness.com/2020/03/17/access-google-classroom-with-your-phone-your-xbox-or-your-playstation/

Assessment

As was shared in a recent letter from the director, “For elementary students, teachers will use approaches to gather evidence of student learning and will provide meaningful feedback to students on their progress. Evidence of significant improvement in learning, during the closure period, may be taken into consideration by the teacher when assigning a final grade in a subject area. Otherwise, students, in Grades 1 to 8, will be assigned the grades earned based on their learning of the expectations in the curriculum up until schools closed on March 13, 2020. All students, Kindergarten to Grade 8, will receive a June report card.”
