EYA Archives

Welcome to the EYA Archives!

Below you will find a sampling of the kinds of events, field trips, and activities that take place at EYA throughout the school year. All the events below have taken place within the last few years at the school.

VR Contest Video About EYA

In the spring of 2017, with a week to complete it from start to finish, many students and staff pitched in to help put together a two-minute video about our school.  The video was for a competition that, had we won, would have meant winning a classroom VR kit.  Unfortunately, we were not one of the prize winners, but the whole process was a winning one for us as we worked together to create something special.

NAC10 and ENG4C/U Cross-Curricular Project

The two courses joined to look at the art of telling stories.  Oral storytelling is a foundation of teaching in indigenous communities, and a large component of this teaching is based on the connectivity of all life.  To honour this concept we participated in an outing with the Toronto Aboriginal Eco Tour company.  Students explored the beauty and value of our natural world. The courses also examined storytelling in a variety of other forms such as short film, graphic novels, poetry, and memoir.

The Kindness Campaign

One of the assignments from the Leadership course (2016-2017 academic year) was to create your own kindness campaign.  These are some of the results of one student's campaign to spread kindness by writing inspiring chalk messages around the outside of the school.

Student Visit From Greenwood Secondary School

In April of 2017, EYA had a visit from seven Greenwood Secondary School students  - all recently arrived from Syria - to talk about their experience as new arrivals, about Syria, and to share in some games and food (along with their guidance counsellor, Melissa, too!).  We also had the privilege of preparing Syrian food under the guidance of the kind and talented Khawla.

Politics and Leadership Cross-Curricular Field Trip

This all-day field trip combined the Leadership, World Politics, and English classes for a trip downtown.  The morning involved a viewing of the documentary about the detention of refugees destined for Australia called "Chasing Asylum", while the afternoon was spent interviewing people, creating short films, and ranting about the world's troubles.

Field Trip to View "Sonita" at the Aga Khan Museum

Film and History classes attended a screening of the documentary "Sonita" at the Aga Khan Museum.  It also gave the group a chance to view the exhibit "Syria:  A Living History" which was helpful to introduce the topic of Syria for the history class that was studiying Syria and Afghanistan this semester.

Film Class Visit to ET Canada Studio

In May, the Film class had the opportunity to go on a tour of the Entertainment Tonight set at Global Studio.  Not only did we see some taping of the show, but we got a chance to meet the people behind the scenes, visit the control room, see the wardrobe department, the video library, and even the editing rooms.  Very informative trip and a really welcoming crew at Global.

History Class Visit to Greenwood Secondary School

The Origins and Citizenship history class visited Greenwood Secondary School to get a tour of the school and meet a group of students who had recently arrived from Afghanistan.  There was a great discussion as students from both schools asked questions, shared their experiences, and gained a better understanding of Afghanistan, Canada, and life in general. We hope to continue our connection with Greenwood Secondary School and all of the great students who attend there.
