Don't miss PIAC's 16th annual Ready-Set-Engage parent/caregiver conference: Sunday November 27, 10:30-3:00. With speakers & workshops focused on bridging gaps in our schools in Mental Health, Parent Engagement and School Councils. Click HERE for additional information and registration.

The following letter was emailed to grade 4 – 8 students and families this past Thursday regarding social media concerns. We recognize that students need to be guided and supervised by the adults in their lives as they navigate the online world. We will be hosting an information session, Digital Intelligence & Well-being, for students and families.

This past week our grade 4 – 8 students participated in a TVO Mathify presentation and created an account. This free Ministry of Education resource provides free 1-1 tutoring for students in grades 4 - 12. I encourage you to visit the TVO Mathify parents area.

Week of November 6, 2022

Good evening,

An extra hour of sleep and record breaking temperatures this weekend!!! I hope you were able to get outside and enjoy the weather.

Thank you for your patience as we navigate the on-going situation between CUPE and the provincial government. Each of you should have received an email from the TDSB on Friday afternoon. It states: While we remain hopeful that an agreement can be reached, should CUPE job action continue into next week, TDSB schools will remain closed to in-person student learning. I expect an update at some point tonight. This update will have a significant impact on how the week progresses. In preparation for a potential pivot to virtual learning we are asking families who will need a device(s) to complete the following Google form. Please complete one form per child that needs a device. Additional details can be found on the form.

November is Indigenous Education Month at the TDSB. It is an opportunity to learn from Indigenous perspectives on treaties, Indigenous leadership, achievements, resurgence, futurities, and creativity. I will highlight several important days throughout the month. For example, November 7 – 11 is Treaties Recognition Week.

The evening of November 17 and the morning of November 18 have been set aside for student-parent- teacher interviews. These conferences are an essential part of the teaching and learning cycle. It is an opportunity to discuss your child's strengths, areas of need, to explain how we will support learning at school and how you can support learning at home. Each of you will receive a Google form tomorrow to indicate your preferred date/time and means (phone, virtual or in-person). We ask that you submit the Google form no later than Wednesday, November 9 at 8:00pm.

Thank you for continuing to do the Toronto Public Health daily self-assessment before entering Fleming PS and stay home if they are sick. The daily self-assessment from Toronto Public Health provides direction for individuals who have symptoms and when they can return to school.

Week of October 30, 2022

Good evening,

Another week-end full of sunshine! I hope you were able to get outside and enjoy the weather.

Thank you to Ayden (student rep), parents/guardians, and staff that attended our School Advisory Council meeting this past Wednesday. I encourage you to visit our website for additional information and the names of our nine 2022-2023 executive. I presented my October Principal’s Report. Our next meeting is Wednesday, November 30th at 6:30pm. We will continue to use a hybrid approach, virtual & in-person. Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting.

Each year, Halloween is marked in a variety of ways in school communities across the TDSB. Students can choose whether or not to participate in Halloween related activities. Tomorrow, Monday, October 31, Fleming PS students may choose to wear a Halloween costume to school.  If choosing to wear a costume, please follow the TDSB guidelines listed below:

  1. Discriminatory and offensive costumes (including but not limited to stereotypical costumes linked to Indigenous identity, race, cultures, religion, etc.) are not permitted, are unacceptable and will not be condoned in TDSB learning and working environments. Costumes must comply with the school Code of Conduct, the Student Dress Code, the Indigenous Education Policy and the Human Rights Code. Consider utilizing the following website on Inclusive Halloween Costumes https://rights.info.yorku.ca/inclusive-halloween-costumes/
  2. Also, the TDSB has published the following two articles to assist with costume choices: Halloween 2022 - Cultures Are Not Costumes & #MyCultureIsNotACostume.
  3. Fake weapons and costume masks that obscure the face are not permitted.
  4. If your child chooses to wear a costume, please bring a change of clothes. Why? We do not want the costume being damaged during outside play over the lunch hour.
  5. We ask that you do not send food treats to be shared with your child’s class. Why? Many of our students have a variety of allergies and we need to keep them safe.

Congratulations to our two grade 4 students and two grade 7 students that competed at the cross-country city championships.

September 1, 2022

2022 – 2023 WELCOME BACK TO FLEMING PS!

On behalf of the staff at Fleming PS, I would like to extend a warm and friendly welcome to our students and families. We trust that you had a wonderful summer break with your children and that you were able to enjoy many shared activities. We look forward to welcoming students and families back on Wednesday, September 7th.

It is a privilege and honour to be the principal of Fleming PS. I am excited about the opportunity to contribute and collaborate with such a strong school community. I have heard many positive comments from both the staff and the parent community of your commitment to support an excellent academic program and a wide variety of co-curricular activities. It is exciting to be a part of a school community that believes in all students receiving a “well rounded” education.

I am excited to be starting my 24th year as an educator. I have taught a variety of grades and spent several years as an elementary guidance counsellor at multiple schools. As an administrator, I was vice-principal at Gordon A. Brown MS and Joseph Howe Sr. PS prior to my time as a principal at William G. Miller PS & Dr. Marion Hilliard Sr. PS. I am very proud of what the staff, students, and community accomplished during that period.

There are a few ways to stay connected with the school. I will be sending a weekly update, What’s On at Fleming, to the school community using the TDSB’s automated email messaging system. Please ensure the school has your up-to-date email address. Our website, https://schoolweb.tdsb.on.ca/fleming/ , and Twitter account, @schoolfleming , are two other ways to stay informed. Make sure to follow us for updates! In preparation for the first day of school on Wednesday, September 7th I encourage you to spend a few minutes to review the following:

  • 2022 – 2023 WELCOME BACK SLIDESHOW – Contains information about the first day routine, staying for lunch, traffic safety, Covid-19 measures, and plenty of other valuable school information.
  • DRESS CODE SLIDESHOW – Fleming PS has a dress code that will be reviewed with students.
  • Our kindergarten slideshow was sent out in June.
  • VOLUNTARY VIRTUAL INFORMATION SESSION on Tuesday, September 6th (6pm)– Our hope is to increase excitement and alleviate concerns about the first day for families. The link will be shared Tuesday afternoon. The recording of the session will be posted on our website following the session.

We encourage parents/guardians to be involved in their children’s education by supporting our School Advisory Council. Education is a partnership between parents, students, teachers, and school administration. Your participation in the council will give you the opportunity to strengthen that partnership, and to be part of a diverse team working to support your child’s education. Your involvement can make a difference! Stay tuned for our first meeting date and time.

My door is always open. Please do not hesitate to contact the school’s office or send me an email (matt.johnston@tdsb.on.ca) if you have any questions or concerns.

Best wishes for a great start to 2022 – 2023 school year,

Matt Johnston

Principal
