Week of October 28, 2024

Good afternoon,

I am very grateful for our many student leaders in Student Council. They continue to play a prominent role at Fleming PS. They are currently selling Halloween snack packs, All purchases for this fundraiser are made using SchoolCash Online. They have arranged for each class to participate in a Halloween electives dance for 40 minutes on Thursday,

Each year, Halloween is marked in a variety of ways in school communities across the TDSB. Students can choose whether to participate in Halloween related activities. On Thursday, October 31, Fleming students may choose to wear a Halloween costume to school.  If choosing to wear a costume, please follow the TDSB guidelines listed below:

  1. Discriminatory and offensive costumes (including but not limited to stereotypical costumes linked to Indigenous identity, race, cultures, religion, etc.) are not permitted, are unacceptable and will not be condoned in TDSB learning and working environments. Costumes must comply with the school Code of Conduct, the Student Dress Code, the Indigenous Education Policy and the Human Rights Code. The TDSB has published the following two articles to assist with costume choices: Halloween - Cultures Are Not Costumes & #MyCultureIsNotACostume.
  2. The following article on Inclusive Halloween Costumes has five guiding questions to assist with appropriate costume choices.
  3. Fake weapons and costume masks that obscure the face are not permitted.
  4. If your child chooses to wear a costume, please bring a change of clothes. Why? We do not want the costume being damaged during outside play over the lunch hour.
  5. We ask that you do not send food treats to be shared with your child’s class. Why? Many of our students have a variety of allergies and we need to keep them safe.

Week of September 30, 2024

Good afternoon,

It was great to see many of you this past Thursday at our Welcome Back Pizza Fundraiser and Meet the Teacher evening.

Tomorrow (September 30) is the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. Students are encouraged to wear orange to acknowledge the truths of Residential Schools in Canada. A group of our intermediate students will be facilitating two age-appropriate assemblies (kindergarten – grade 3 & grade 4 – 8) to recognize the day of remembrance for the Indigenous children who never came home from Canadian residential schools, as well as those who survived them.

Every September, schools review actual student enrolment as compared to initial projections from last April and reorganize classes where required. We do our best to plan for the new school year, but there are always factors, such as new or departing students, that might affect how classrooms are organized. As a result of changing student enrolment at our school, we were required to reorganize a couple classrooms. I called each family that were impacted by these changes and sent a letter home this past Thursday.

There are two opportunities for you to get involved at Fleming PS this week:

  1. Wednesday, October 2nd at 6:30pm – Our first school advisory council meeting. Everyone is welcome to attend. You can participate in two ways:

Week of September 16, 2024

Good evening,

I trust that you are having a fantastic weekend.

Picture Day is tomorrow on Monday, September 16. Students do not need to wear their school uniform. Class photos and sibling photos will be taking place in the January.

We hope you will be able to join us for our Welcome Back Pizza Fundraiser & Meet the Teacher evening on Thursday, September 26th. The FLYER has additional details. If you are able to join us for the Welcome Back Pizza Fundraiser you will need to pre-purchase food using School Cash Online. You should have received a notification from SchoolCash Online this past Friday.

Each week I share a resource that you can access to support your child’s development. TVO has many educational resources to explore. Here are two of them:

  1. TVO mPower (kindergarten – grade 6) – A variety of free educational tools.
  2. TVO Mathify (Grades 4 – 8) – Free math tutoring with certified Ontario teachers.

The Welcome Back slideshow will continue to be updated to inform parents, students and staff. Here are a couple items that I wanted to highlight:

  1. STUDENT SAFETY DURING DROP-OFF & PICK-UP: It has been great to meet many of you at the kiss and ride. Students must exit their vehicles on the passenger/curb side for safety reasons. Exiting on the driver’s side means students enter a live lane of traffic. Please remember to use the cross walk when crossing Littles Road. Thanks to our crossing guard, Melinda, for keeping us safe.
  2. SEPTEMBER START OF YEAR FORMS – Thank you to the many who have completed them online. Thank you to the many who have completed them online. The email will come from TDSB Online Form (noreplyregistration@powerschool.com) and will take you to a secure site to complete and submit your child’s forms. Click HERE for more information. 2024 – 2025 WELCOME BACK TO FLEMING PS!

On behalf of the staff at Fleming PS, I would like to extend a warm and friendly welcome to our students and families.  We trust that you had a wonderful summer break with your children and that you were able to enjoy many shared activities.  We look forward to welcoming students and families back on Tuesday, September 3rd at 8:40 am.

It is a privilege and honour to be back as the principal of Fleming PS as I begin my 26th year as an educator. I am excited about the opportunity to continue to contribute and collaborate with such a strong school community. It is exciting to be a part of a school community that believes in all students receiving a “well rounded” education.

There are a few ways to stay connected with the school. I will be sending a weekly update, What’s On at Fleming, to the school community using the TDSB’s automated email messaging system. Please ensure the school has your up-to-date email address.  Our website, https://schoolweb.tdsb.on.ca/fleming/ , and Twitter account, @schoolfleming , are two other ways to stay informed. Make sure to follow us for updates! In preparation for the first day of school on Tuesday, September 3rd at 8:40 am. I encourage you to spend a few minutes to review the following:

On Friday, August 30th you will receive an email which states the name of you child’s teacher and the entrance/exit where they will meet their teacher on the first day.

We encourage parents/guardians to be involved in their children’s education by supporting our School Council.  Education is a partnership between parents, students, teachers, and school administration. Your participation in the council will give you the opportunity to strengthen that partnership, and to be part of a diverse team working to support your child’s education. Your involvement can make a difference! Stay tuned for our first meeting date and time.

My door is always open. Please do not hesitate to contact the school’s office or send me an email (matt.johnston@tdsb.on.ca) if you have any questions or concerns.

Best wishes for a great start to 2024 – 2025 school year,

Matt Johnston

Principal
