Principal’s Update–October 8, 2019
I would like to take a moment to thank our community for the exceptional support you have demonstrated during our school year start up. It really has been a very positive start regardless of a number of complex challenges.
Communication is key to our relationships. Thank you for completing the online forms requested by TDSB this school year, and if you have yet to submit your First Day Student Information forms, please do so right away. This documentation is required for your child to fully and safely participate widely in school events.
One more shout out for our Terry Fox fundraiser, bringing in $1,673.57!!! Eight times the amount raised the previous year. We are very proud and grateful for your generosity.
Our staffing remained consistent and we were not required to re-organize our school this year. Below you will find our confirmed school organization.

The start of the school year focussed on establishing respect, routines developing and building positive relationships at school with a focus on safety and inclusion. We continue our Character Assemblies each month. At the end of October we will be recognizing those students who are best demonstrating responsible behavior. In developing our local Dress Code we are focussing on respect, responsibility, student voice and discretion.
Our School Improvement Team has been meeting to plan how we will focus and deliver our three goals (Achievement, Well-being and Equity), and we will continue this Planning on October 11th which is a PA day. We are also meeting regularly with our Superintendent of Education, Shirley Chan, and sharing our school data and next big moves. We continue to advocate for increased support for our students who need more help to learn and participate successfully and safely at school.
Current extra-curricular opportunities include Cross Country running, Robotics,, Learning Commons Team, (LCT), WECO=(Eco Club +Me to We), Girls Soccer/Boys Soccer and Primary Yoga. Our Grade 6 students will soon be departing for Kearney our Outdoor Education Centre (October 21-23). This is a fantastic team building and learning experience.
We continue to need volunteers with Police Reference Checks for participating in trips and drivers for our teams. Please come to the office if you are looking for an application for a PRC. Please note that our school will be a polling station for Elections Canada on October 21. The school yard will be even busier than ever at drop off and pick up. Please be aware and alert.
Thank you for continuing to walk or ride with your child to school, and for finding parking a safe distance away to avoid congestion and safety concerns. Our parking lot is, as always for staff members and busses only. In addition, if you see suspicious behavior or vandalism taking place on our property after school hours please call TDSB security at 416-395-4620.
We had an excellent turn out to our first School Council meeting on October 1. The school council is an advisory council that is committed to the well-being and improvement of a school. A new Mackie council was elected and many plans started for the year to come. Please see our new executive and membership below. Please note, that you do not need to be an elected voting member to come out to our meetings and have a voice; you only need to be a parent of a child attending at Mackie. Below you will also find the list of our meetings scheduled for the year.

As we move into the cooler seasons please remember that our students spend considerable time outdoors in all weather. Please continue to dress or remind your child to wear layers and send spare clothing (e.g socks for our older students). Finally, let me take a brief moment of your time to express my appreciation for the manner in which you handled the CUPE job action and the respectful support you demonstrate toward our entire staff each day.
We are off to a great start and we look forward to learning and growing with your children.
