What's happening at Hillmount?

Hillmount Public School

Hillmount Public School was built as a SEF (Study in Educational Facilities) school, which was a popular idea in the early 1960's. These schools were prefabricated and economical to build. Hillmount was one of four schools that were built under SEF. SEF schools had common elements- air conditioning, and climate controlled, interchangeable furniture, narrow windows, rubber gym floors (which were easier to maintain) and a recessed Music Room. When Hillmount was first built, it was considered futuristic and the new wave for schools. These special features at the time were not found in any of the other schools across the GTA.

Have you ever wondered why Hillmount's front door is hidden on the side of the school? Originally, the designers of the school wanted the front door to face the street. However, to their surprise an underground creek made it difficult to align the front door, so they decided to put the front door on the side of the school. At that time, in 1970, when the school first opened, Hillmount had 465 students and 250 students were bused. The community was under development and the need for schools in the area was great. Hillmount had five portables to accommodate the large population at the school. Eventually, surrounding schools were built to assist this growing community.

Hillmount Public School in 2021/2022 has a student population of approximately 230 students. Currently, we are a K-5 school. We had a recent addition to our building to accommodate Full Day Kindergarden. Our daycare now occupies two of the classrooms at Hillmount. What was once an open concept school now has partial walls separating the classrooms. Large green grass areas surround the school building, with baseball, soccer, and basketball courts. Seneca College is directly behind Hillmount Public School. Hillmount has gone through a revamp of our library and will continue to look at upgrading technology in our school.
