chool Councils are legislated bodies, governed by Regulation 612 of the Ontario Education Act. School Council and all of those who attend School Council meetings and activities shall adhere to these regulations, as well as the policies and the procedures of the Toronto District School Board. Regulation 612/00 of the Ontario Education Act states that “the purpose of School Councils is, through the active participation of parents, to improve student achievement and enhance the accountability of the education system to parents.”
The school council includes elected parents, staff and students; appointed community representatives; the principal or designate; and general membership of all parents and legal guardians of students. School council may be consulted and may advise the principal on school related subject matter including:
- Caring and Safe Schools (Participation on the Committee)
- School Improvement Planning (Participation on the Committee)
- Staffing (Participation on the Committee)
- Budget
- School Statement of Needs
- and any item for which the principal seeks parent engagement
