2026/27 School Council

 

School Councils are legislated bodies, governed by Regulation 612 of the Ontario Education Act. School Council and all of those who attend School Council meetings and activities shall adhere to these regulations, as well as the policies and the procedures of the Toronto District School Board. Regulation 612/00 of the Ontario Education Act states that “the purpose of School Councils is, through the active participation of parents, to improve student achievement and enhance the accountability of the education system to parents.”


The school council includes elected parents, staff and students; appointed community representatives; the principal or designate; and general membership of all parents and legal guardians of students. School council may be consulted and may advise the principal on school related subject matter including:

  • Caring and Safe Schools (Participation on the Committee)
  • School Improvement Planning (Participation on the Committee)
  • Budget
  • School Statement of Needs
  • and any item for which the principal seeks parent engagement

October 8, 2026:

School council positions:

 Including school council need the vulnerable sector check:

  • Take screenshot of completed screen to show evidence of completion
  • Will take time to process
  • Sepideh - set up table at danceathon so we can enroll parents?
  • G to provide working laptop to set it up
  • Julia - is there a cost to process?
    • Sepideh to confirm cost --> $26
  • Elana - police checks in child centre is good for 5 years, how long for TDSB?
    • We do it once and submit to TDSB, Danjela will get a cleared list which can be followed up if situation has changed
    • Additional ID may be required depending on questions answered
  • Sepideh: we should give people the heads up for those interested in volunteering at the school
  • If costs are a barrier, the school council can help support
    • Individuals can use school council gmail
    • Danjela to help share communication to the school, Julia to draft message

 Safe and Caring Schools:

  • If there is a meeting which requires a rep, you get notified of any potential issues brought to attention

 Babysitting certification for Grade 6ers:

  • $86 per student to get trained
    • Parents to get signed up
  • Arrangement, few sessions after school
  • Min group size? TBD but let's see interest first
    • Larissa's family communicated interest!
  • Request to send info to grade 5/6 class given age eligibility

 Grade 6 graduation:

  • If a trip is wanted, may want to support fundraising
  • Patricia --> can we do last pedestrian Sunday parking?  Kids once generated $450+ for a May PSK

 Other upcoming events:

  • Movie night in November
  • Winter concert in December
  • Bike Rodeo 2.0
  • Wellness evening --> revisiting and exploring
  • Fun fair --> maybe more playday for kids
  • Strings but only for grade 6 due to cohort size
    • Will be going to different place to perform (including winter concert)
  • Agriculture Winter Fair

     Other items related to upcoming events:

  • Sepideh --> island trip has not happened, know it takes lot of work and planning would be amazing to bring that back
    • Danjela requested more information
    • Previously was cancelled due to weather, last year was not on agenda
    • Which grades make the most sense to attend? Last time tried to do entire school
    • Danjela --> we should look to do something comparable, with a backup option
  • All school event idea --> grand school trip Jays game?
    • Can work for rain or shine
    • Program is Jays in School --> kicking off in the spring --> TOP SECRET DON'T TELL THE KIDS!

 Teacher update:

  • Orange shirt day and trip to Nathan was high impact with kids
  • Terry Fox run was a success and kids had a blast
    • Kids were very involved and really enjoyed the running
    • Funds raised to be shared
    • Online link set up for Kensington --> G to share for Danjela to share in communication to school
  • Teachers are really excited about this new school year --> how can we develop our outdoor space?
    • Open house really showcased what a gem it was --> what can be added to further enhance it?
    • Soccer field needs some attention especially around safety
  • Food drive
    • Carla: targeting after thanksgiving, support Fort York food bank
  • Socks! (December)
    • Holidays do a sock tree and would donate socks
    • School improvement plan
    • Goal community initiatives
      • Kids learning will compliment initiative

Daycare update:

  • Open house for kids who will be graduating to school
  • Asked parents 
  • Oct 28
  • Registration starts first week of January
  • Patricia to email Elana with ideas and potential 
  • Enrollment
    • Julia what does low mean for before and afterschool program
    • 12 are JK and 5 are Sks
      • Daycare needs more kids to continue
      • Hopefully have families to stay and enroll in KCS
      • Outside registrations from the community 3 from awareness
  • Struggle is filling the before and after care program
  • Losing kids between pre-school or JK
    • Going to french immersion, moving out of area, or going to their home school

 AOB:

  • Language programs - can we do?
    • Added an extra 30 mins to our school day
    • What is Ryerson doing? Leslie to inquire if this is outside of the Saturday language school program
  • Question on french immersion from Donovan
    • French starts in grade 4 up, we do not have french immersion
  • Pizza lunches
    • First is Tuesday Oct 27
    • Biggest challenge is getting volunteers

    • After danceathon get volunteers to sign up
