Dear Manhattan Park Families,
The staff at Manhattan Park look forward to Meet-the-Family Night tomorrow evening (Sept. 25 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.) as we get to meet the families of our wonderful students. If you are unable to join, there will be other opportunities for parents to connect with the school. If you have questions for staff, please email or call the school for an appointment to meet with the teacher. Although we welcome all parents/guardians into the building, please refrain from walking into the hallway without checking in with the office first. Safety is of utmost importance, and all adults in the school must be accounted for. Thank you for your understanding.
Manhattan Park's Terry Fox School Run/Walk is rescheduled for September 29, as there is a forecast of rain tomorrow. Here is the link to make a donation and continue Terry's legacy: https://schools.terryfox.ca/107304. This year, our fundraising goal is $500.00. Thank you, Ms. Rankin, for organizing the event. Also, thank you, Ms. Skrivanos, for coaching the Cross Country Club and the Running Club! [Note: Running Club (Gr. 1-6) is cancelled on Monday, September 29th. Students in Cross Country will still have practice after school ~ Mrs. Skrivanos]
As a result of the September class reorganization, our school has received additional staff allocations to support large class sizes and alleviate the triple-grade combination. I am pleased to introduce Ms. Alexa, our new DK teacher (Room 3) and Mr. Chen, our new French/Arts teacher (Room 1)! With restructuring, Ms. Kapilan will now be teaching the Grade 3/4 class in Room 4, and Ms. Rankin will be teaching the Grade 5/6 class in Room 7. New classes will start on Monday, September 29.
September 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Together, we recognize the legacy of Canada's residential school system and continue to learn the many truths of these institutions. The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) proudly recognizes Islamic Heritage Month (IHM) during the month of October. Proclaiming a month to be Islamic Heritage Month in Ontario will provide all Ontarians, both today and in future generations, with an opportunity to reflect, celebrate, and learn about the rich and longstanding Islamic history in the Province and the diverse roles and contributions of Muslim people in communities across Ontario. The TDSB also proudly recognizes Somali Heritage Month during the month of October. Ontario and the TDSB recognize the economic, political, social and cultural achievements and contributions of Somali Canadians in all aspects of Ontario society. Latin America History Month is proudly recognized by the TDSB in October, with the focus on the communal purpose of raising consciousness and moving toward reclaiming whole, authentic selves, along with a (re)commitment to reciprocal relations, solidarity, and action towards a just world.
Our first Council meeting will take place on October 1st at 6:30 pm. Here is the link to join virtually: October Council Meeting. All parents/caregivers are welcome to attend meetings. If you would like to become a Voting Member, please complete the form by September 30 here: Voting Member Interest Form. You do not have to be a Voting Member to attend Parent Council meetings. Right after our Parent Council meeting on October 1st, voting members will elect the Executive Members. Our School Council page on the school website contains more information about School Councils.
As always, the safety of our students is a priority, and we ask that you reinforce with your children common street-proofing and safety procedures. Below, you will find a helpful list for discussing street safety with your child(ren).
Children should:
- Always walk with a buddy to and from school;
- Always tell your parents where you are;
- Never accept gifts from strangers;
- When help is needed, go to the nearest store or school, the home of a friend or run towards a group of people or a parent with children;
- Never approach or enter a stranger’s car; adults have no acceptable reason to offer a ride or to ask children for directions or assistance;
- If a car is following you, change directions and run;
- Say ‘NO’ if an adult wants you to do something you know is wrong;
- Know your name, address and phone number;
- Know that police officers can help you;
- Tell your parents or teacher whenever someone treats you in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS.
Stronger Together,
Ms. Lin
