Shirley Street Public School is located in the vibrant community south west of Dundas and Brock Streets. It was first built in 1881 as a two-room school. The present building was constructed in 1963. The school serves nearly 200 students with over two-thirds of the population coming from homes where English is not their first language. The two largest non-English speaking groups are Cantonese and Portuguese with a recent increase in Vietnamese.
Shirley St. P.S. is an OPAL school. The school is also home to a vibrant Early On Parenting Centre. Equity, Community, Inclusiveness and High Expectations are the cornerstones of the programming at Shirley St. PS.
