We Are One Jazz

We Are One Jazz

Our Grade 5 students in Mrs. Ritchies's class participated in the We Are One Jazz Choir. On March 31st the students presented their culminating GALA concert at The Toronto Centre for the Arts. Along with the beautiful music performed by the combined choir of 250 students, there was a professional big band and string ensemble, an adult choir and special guest, legendary musician Barry Harris.

To prepare for this Gala event, students met weekly with the choir for rehearsals and met with vocal coaches each week at the school.  During the coaching sessions, students learned the art of Jazz and Blues singing and scatting.    Congratulations to our Blues ensemble, Jasmine, Maliakah and Olivia A. and our scatter, Azaria, who performed on stage at the gala.

Here is what some of the Grade 5 students had to say about their experience:

I really like the ‘’We Are One Jazz” project because we sing together as one community that is why it is called we are one jazz project. The songs in this concert shows different kinds of emotions and feelings. By Alishaz

The We Are One Jazz Project is so much fun and there is so many opportunities and chances we get to open up to music and really feel the beat, the program is very musical and I hope to be in the program again next year! By Maliakah

It has been extremely fun to be doing trios in class whenever Kenny and Lenny come, I love it that we get to make our own songs and then perform them with our friends. By Jasmine
