Earth day April 22

April 22 is Earth Day

Forty years after the first Earth Day, the world is in greater peril than ever. While climate change is a challenge of our time, Earth Day provides opportunity to build a healthy, prosperous, clean energy economy now and for the future. This is a turning point to advance climate policy, energy efficiency, renewable energy and green jobs. Earth Day Network is exciting millions to make personal commitments to sustainability. It is a pivotal opportunity for individuals, corporations and governments to join together and create a global green economy. Join the more than one billion people in 190 countries that are taking action for Earth Day. Steelesview will be participating in an EARTH DAY CLEAN UP on April 26.

Bags2School

For 2 weeks in December, we will be having another Bag2School donation pick-up of gently used clothing and other textiles. Bag2School is a textile recycling company that takes back unwanted, wearable and unwearable (i.e., ripped or stained) textiles to be reused or refurbished into new textiles and materials and pays our school money. Upon pick-up of textiles, a cheque will be issued to the school based on the weight collected! So, If you have any unwanted, ripped, stained or old clothing items, shoes, boots, blankets, table covers, bed sheets, and any other textiles, please put them in bags to bring to school in December.

STEELESVIEW ECO CLUB MONTHLY NEWS

September 2018

Welcome to the new 2018-2019 school year here at Steelesview! Every month, we will be publishing a small article for you and your children to read. We encourage you to read these news clips with your children so you can learn more about the Earth and our Eco Club!

September was an amazing first month! We recruited about 20 members. We need parents too! If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Mrs. Keltz at shiry.keltz@tdsb.on.ca to join. Your assistance for Waste Audits would be a big help! Thank you!

We have once again achieved a Gold Eco Schools Status! Our Eco Schools audit showed that we have good waste management skills, but we are still wasting A TON OF food! Make sure to keep the Earth clean for generations to come. The Earth thanks you all!

Fall is here! On October 3rd, students, families and staff are encouraged to join schools across the country in celebrating International Walk to School Day (IWALK/IWHEEL), a day that celebrates all forms of active transportation including walking, cycling, scootering and/or travelling using a mobility device.

For resources including posters and event ideas, click here.

Did you know October is also International Walk to School Month? If you're feeling up to the challenge, consider celebrating active transportation all month long.

As autumn arrives, the days begin to get shorter and increasing our visibility on city streets becomes especially important. The following are some safety tips from Toronto Public Health to keep in mind before heading outside:

  • Carry identification, a cell phone and a whistle
  • Bring water
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes and bright, reflective clothing
  • Dress for the weather
  • Cross streets at traffic lights, stop signs or crosswalks-always walk facing traffic
  • Avoid using headphones and cell phones while walking
  • Tell someone where you are going
  • Check the Air Quality Health Index and UV index before you start your walk
  • Be sun safe

Show us how you're celebrating!

Share your IWALK/IWHEEL event with us by tweeting @EcoSchoolsTDSB and @TDSB using the hashtag #walktoschool or #biketoschool
