  2. Please do not send food to be shared with other students. We have many students who have life threatening allergies. For example, if you choose to send a ‘loot’ bag to celebrate your child’s birthday please consider sending pencils, erasers, a squishy ball, etc.. Thank you for understanding.
  3. DRESS CODE: We appreciate your efforts to ensure students are wearing a light grey top and black bottoms.

Week of January 29, 2024

Good afternoon,

I want to highlight the pedestrian safety slideshow as we begin the week. As a reminder, there is no parking or waiting in the drop off/pick-up loop. This creates unsafe conditions as students are forced to walk between cars and it disrupts the orderly flow of traffic. Also, I strongly recommend that students get out (or in) of your vehicle on the curb side/passenger side of the vehicle. We do not want students stepping into a live lane of traffic. We had a near miss this week. Student safety is paramount.

We are excited to be hosting an in-person Early Reading Strategies Session for parents/caregivers of students in kindergarten to grade 3 on Monday, February 12 at 8:50am in our library. If you can attend, please email me (matt.johnston@tdsb.on.ca) or complete the Google form to register.

Good afternoon,

It is hard to believe we are about to begin the final week of classes for 2023. It is going to be a busy one!

Week of October 30, 2023

Good afternoon,

The weekly update is lengthy; however, it is full of important information. Please take a few minutes to review What’s On @ Fleming PS.

Each year, Halloween is marked in a variety of ways in school communities across the TDSB. Students can choose whether or not to participate in Halloween related activities. On Tuesday, October 31, Fleming students may choose to wear a Halloween costume to school.  If choosing to wear a costume, please follow the TDSB guidelines listed below:

  1. Discriminatory and offensive costumes (including but not limited to stereotypical costumes linked to Indigenous identity, race, cultures, religion, etc.) are not permitted, are unacceptable and will not be condoned in TDSB learning and working environments. Costumes must comply with the school Code of Conduct, the Student Dress Code, the Indigenous Education Policy and the Human Rights Code. The TDSB has published the following two articles to assist with costume choices: Halloween 2023 - Cultures Are Not Costumes & #MyCultureIsNotACostume.
  2. The following article on Inclusive Halloween Costumes has five guiding questions to assist with appropriate costume choices.
  3. Fake weapons and costume masks that obscure the face are not permitted.
  4. If your child chooses to wear a costume, please bring a change of clothes. Why? We do not want the costume being damaged during outside play over the lunch hour.
  5. We ask that you do not send food treats to be shared with your child’s class. Why? Many of our students have a variety of allergies and we need to keep them safe.

November is Indigenous Education Month at the TDSB. Students at Fleming PS will be engaging with the giant Indigenous Floor Learning Map over the next couple of weeks. As part of Treaties Recognition Week, we are inviting parents & guardians to come to the gymnasium and see the map on November 6 or 7 at 8:30am or 3:20pm.

2023 – 2024 WELCOME BACK TO FLEMING PS!

On behalf of the staff at Fleming PS, I would like to extend a warm and friendly welcome to our students and families.  We trust that you had a wonderful summer break with your children and that you were able to enjoy many shared activities.  We look forward to welcoming students and families back on Tuesday, September 5th.

It is a privilege and honour to be back as the principal of Fleming PS as I begin my 25th year as an educator. I am excited about the opportunity to continue to contribute and collaborate with such a strong school community. It is exciting to be a part of a school community that believes in all students receiving a “well rounded” education.

There are a few ways to stay connected with the school. I will be sending a weekly update, What’s On at Fleming, to the school community using the TDSB’s automated email messaging system. Please ensure the school has your up-to-date email address.  Our website, https://schoolweb.tdsb.on.ca/fleming/ , and Twitter account, @schoolfleming , are two other ways to stay informed. Make sure to follow us for updates! In preparation for the first day of school on Tuesday, September 5th. I encourage you to spend a few minutes to review the following:

On Friday, September 1 you will receive an email which states the name of you child’s teacher and the entrance/exit where they will meet their teacher on the first day.

We encourage parents/guardians to be involved in their children’s education by supporting our School Council.  Education is a partnership between parents, students, teachers, and school administration. Your participation in the council will give you the opportunity to strengthen that partnership, and to be part of a diverse team working to support your child’s education. Your involvement can make a difference! Stay tuned for our first meeting date and time.

My door is always open. Please do not hesitate to contact the school’s office or send me an email (matt.johnston@tdsb.on.ca) if you have any questions or concerns.

Best wishes for a great start to 2023 – 2024 school year,

Matt Johnston

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I would like to take this opportunity to wish our incredible students and families a fantastic summer break. We have all worked very hard this year. Students, parents, staff and community members have collaborated on many projects within the school that have been so meaningful. Three community events that I am most proud of are the Pancake Breakfast, our Winter Concert and the Fun Fair. These projects showcased the strength of our school community. We have much to be proud of at Fleming PS.

Another highlight this year has been the partnership with of our parent council.  I would like to thank our parent council executive: Nadia (co-chair), Lisa (co-chair), Dawn (treasurer), Serena (secretary), Jasmine, Karthiga, Sandeep, Sherene, & Yvonne. Your contributions are greatly appreciated.

At this time of the year we recognize our departing staff members as they move on to new opportunities. Ms. Hamaoka will be leaving after 17 years at Fleming PS. I would like to thank her for her many contributions. We also had two amazing long-term occasional teachers who have been a great part of the team this year: Mr. Kauden & Ms. Haas. We wish them all the best in their new schools next year in the TDSB.

We will be welcoming new staff members to the school in September to strengthen our amazing Fleming team. Hiring is still ongoing throughout the summer and the staff roster is not yet complete. You will receive an email on Friday, September 1 with your child’s teacher, entrance number and room number. School resumes on Tuesday, September 5.

Finally, I would like to thank our parents, guardians and caregivers for your amazing support this past year. Thank you for believing education will be stronger when we work together.

Best regards for a relaxing summer,

Matt Johnston
