Broadlands Public School Code of Conduct

Code de comportement de l’école publique Broadlands

Broadlands Dress Code

Dress Code* is the appropriate dress policy established by each school in consultation with parents through their school councils, and may include a school uniform.

Inappropriate Dress* refers to a standard of attire which does not meet the school community standards of decency and shall include language and/or representations on attire that indicates gang affiliation, that depicts violence, profanity, racial or gender discrimination or discrimination of any kind whatsoever, or that otherwise demeans an identifiable individual or group.

*Definitions from TDSB Policy P042 APPROPRIATE DRESS

At Broadlands, students, staff, parents, caregivers and volunteers are expected to adhere to a dress code that reflects a respectful attitude towards themselves, others and in particular toward learning. This dress code is in effect on school property and on school field trips or other school events.

  • Clothing should not be see-through
  • Clothing should cover undergarments
  • Clothing shall not convey an unacceptable message: Promoting violence, issues of oppression (racism, sexism, homophobia, etc.), drugs, or alcohol; or displaying lewd or sexually offensive message or inappropriate language
  • Outer clothing such as hats, gloves, jackets, coats and heavy boots are to be left in the classroom during the day while students are in class
  • Students need to have appropriate clothing for active participation in physical education classes (running shoes). They may also bring a change of shorts, socks, track pants, T-shirt

If a student arrives at school inappropriately dressed, a staff member will meet with the student to discuss what changes must be made in order that he/she may remain at the school. The student may be asked to:

  • Turn inappropriate clothing inside out
  • Change into clothing provided by the school
  • Make a telephone call to alert a parent of the concerns and make immediate arrangements to have appropriate clothing brought to school or, alternately, confirm arrangements to return home to change

If a student demonstrates continuing disregard for a school policy, progressive discipline will be used to resolve the situation.
