Principal's Message

Bienvenue!

Students are busy and hard at work while they are learning at Broadlands School. As a French Immersion Centre, we are proud of the French language environment that Broadlands provides students. With the exception of Music, Dance, Physical Education and Health all subjects are taught in French, until English is introduced in Grade 4. Students are expected to use French as their language of communication throughout the day and respond to French greetings and questions en français! We look forward to another productive year working with our students and parents.

The Home - School Partnership - An Important Key to School Success

We know from research that when parents are involved in their children’s education, the children do better in school. At Broadlands, partnership between the home and the school is a valued and important part of our philosophy and practice. One of the ways for you to communicate with your child’s teacher is through the agenda.

To be participating and contributing members of the Broadlands school community, particularly in matters of student safety and security of the school, students and parents must be aware of and agree to the school Code of Behaviour, rules and routines. We also encourage parents to volunteer their time and be a part of the School Advisory Council (SAC), which plays an active role in our school.

We welcome your comments and suggestions.

Broadlands Safe School Reminders

The staff members of our school want to ensure that Broadlands PS is a safe place each and every day for our students, parents and community. Arrival and dismissal times are very busy for everyone here at Broadlands. Therefore it is very important that our students pay attention to what is going on in their environment. Traffic has increased along Broadlands Boulevard, and we want to work together with you to ensure the safety of all of the children and community members of our school. We ask that parents and students review and observe the following procedures for the safety of our school community.

Entry Time:

  • The bus loop is for buses only. Please do not use it to turn around in, drive through or drop children between 7:45 a.m. – 3:45 p.m. as we have seven buses for students who need to be received safely.  There is city signage in front of the school.  If you do not follow parking signs, you may be ticketed.
  • Students who are dropped off in the morning should go directly into the school yard and line up with their classes between 8:00 - 8:10 a.m.. School instruction begins at 8:15 a.m. The only students who should be coming through the front door are those who arrive after 8:15 a.m., as they are late.
  • Please drive slowly and responsibly in the immediate school zone.

Arriving Late?

The following is the sign-in procedure for those students who are late in the morning. Students are to line up at the to sign in with Mme Yong. This system will help in keeping student attendance accurate.

Entry Into School for Parents/Caregivers:

During the school day, between 8:15 a.m. – 2:45 p.m., we ask that parents and caregivers provide notice if they will be picking up their child during the instructional day as this interrupt classes in sessions. To help us better, please provide a note or call to inform us in advance so that we can have your child ready for pick up. As we are helping our students line up outside for entry and for dismissal independently, we are asking parents who are watching or picking up their children enter the building. Thank you for partnering with us to develop independence.

Dismissal Time:
  • The bus loop and the street space between the entrance and exit of the loop are for buses only. Four of our buses fit in the loop and four more fit on the street between the entrance and exit of the loop. We require all of this space to ensure that our students can safely board the buses.
  • Please drive slowly and responsibly in the immediate school zone.

Bus safety:

  • Each year we have a Bus Safety presentation for all of our students, which takes place in the classroom and then on a school bus. We remind all of the students of the importance of choosing respectful behaviour on the bus at all times. Students who misbehave will be issued a “Student Behaviour Report” from the bus driver.
  • Bus drivers have requested that you bring your children to their regular designated bus stop every morning so that pick-up locations are consistent.
  • All children who go home by bus must do so unless the teacher receives a written note from the parent/guardian stating otherwise. Parents and Guardians - we ask that you do not call the school to make alternate arrangements.

Contacting the Office

  • Please ensure that you call the office safe arrival line if your child will be absent or late: 416 395-2092. Parents of students at Broadlands who are not in school and who have not called in their absence will receive an automatic phone call at approximately 9:35 a.m. and/or 1:35 p.m.
  • Please ensure that your child knows the expectation for lunch and after school before they leave each morning. We do not want to interrupt the student’s instructional time with announcements to the class.

  • Yard Supervision:

    • Please be reminded that yard supervision for all students begins at 8:00 a.m. Children can be dropped off between 8:00am and 8:15am.
    • When dropping your child off, please take a moment to watch that he/she has safely entered the schoolyard or, if late, the main entrance to the school. Students who arrive after 8:15 am will be marked late.

We thank you for your cooperation and for supporting us in creating a safer school community for all!
