School Fundraising: Seeking Parents to Help Put Our Principles into Practice

Parents and staff at Gledhill have formed a task group to consider ways to make sure that our fundraising and advertising practices at the school reflect and reinforce our common values.

Parents, staff and student put lots of time and effort into fundraising each your to enrich students’ learning opportunities through special science, theatre, and music programs and more. These efforts should be applauded.

Fundraising is one of the most visible roles of parents in the school. The way that we fundraise – for example, what products we sell or advertise, how much we fundraise for the school itself and how much we fundraise for our wider community, how often we seek contributions from parents – sends an important message to students and parents.
Fundraising is on the rise. Partly due to government under-funding and partly because companies are being more aggressive in marketing their products through schools, parents now raise $500-million per year for Ontario schools.
As pressures to fundraise continue to increase, now is a good time to develop a set of principles to inform our fundraising efforts.
A group of staff and parents are currently developing a set of guidelines to ensure that fundraising and advertising activities at Gledhill reflect values such as inclusion, sharing, health, cooperation, ecological sustainability and social responsibility.
We plan to report our recommendations to SACA in the spring.
