On 25 October 2007, the Government of Canada officially declared October as Islamic History Month, in recognition of "the importance contributions of Canadian Muslims to Canadian society, the cultural diversity of the Canadian Muslim community and the importance of Canadians learning about each other to foster greater social cohesion." Also, at the Regular Board meeting held on 22 June 2016, the TDSB Board of Trustees resolved that the month of October, in each year be declared as Islamic Heritage Month, as well at Somali Heritage Month.

To help us celebrate, our guest speaker Zach Abdul read us a poem.

  Responsibility

Responsibility also means taking care of the only planet we have.  At Westmount, we’ve spent October learning how we can help to appreciate and protect our Earth.  We are all ecoWolverines!! One of the ways that we have been working on being responsible ecoWolverines is by trying to cut the amount of gas in the air to stop air pollution.
On October 26,  students, teachers, staff, and parents walked to school to help keep both their bodies and the earth, healthy.  The Walking Parade picked up students from specific meeting points in the community and they all walked to school together!

The results from our Fall Waste Audit are in.  We are getting better at sorting our waste and making sure everything goes in the right bin.   We’re not perfect but we’re getting better everyday. Well, I think it’s a good time to congratulate the winners of our 2016-2017 fall waste audit.  Congratulations Ms. Leavoy’s class.  Keep up the great work. This class won because they only had 5 items that didn’t belong in the recycling bin.  They also only had 4 items that didn’t belong in the garbage bin.  We’d like to thank Ms. Galloway and her students for making this cool trophy.

Remembrance Day Assembly Nov. 11/16

Let us remember those brave people, who gave their lives for us. We are grateful to them for their great sacrifice. Let us strive to be loving and kind: and to live in such a way as to keep our world at peace, without war.

We had a special guest parent who spoke with us about his experiences as a member of the Armed Forces. Thank you for sharing your time with us, Lt. Sharma.

(Thank you to Mulidzas-Curtis Wilson - Leqwiltokw Artist for our beautiful Canadian Flag)

EARTH RANGERS VISIT

Using the extraordinary power of live animals to teach students about the issues facing Canadian wildlife, our goal is to educate children about biodiversity and to inspire them to take action by becoming directly involved in helping to protect animals and their habitats.

Of course, our favourite animal was the WOLVERINE!!!

We played Scratch, Lightbot, Kodable, Daisy the Dinosaur, The Foos, and Hopscotch. The Hour of Code takes place each year during Computer Science Education Week. Greetings Westmount Families, Unfortunately, we cannot send home Progress Report cards until December 10. Because of previous job action, the central board reporting system will not be updated until December 10 so that all schools will send reports home at the same time. The Progress reporting period is September 8 – October 29, 2015. Your child’s teacher has completed the report card and will be meeting with parents by appointment only to share concerns at this time. All other students will receive their Progress Report card on December 10, 2015.

Westmount Assembly

Westmount celebrated its Fairness Assembly on February 27, 2014.  The theme for this year, Voices of Fairness, showcased quotes from different personalities like Martin Luther King, Bob Marley, Rick Riordan and our very own Ms. Lawrence.  Students who have shown fairness were also acknowledged during the assembly.  Here is the PREZI for Voices of Fairness:
Voices of Fairness
During the assembly Grade 3s also showed stories of fairness using simple animated videos they have been working on.  Here is a sample of  what they have come up with (two others are in the Voices of Fairness link above):

Westmount celebrated Asian Heritage Month together with the Integrity assembly on May 26. The event started with a gamelan (traditional musical percussion instruments from Indonesia) ensemble  and a shadow puppet performance by the grade 5 classes.  Students who have shown integrity in the school were also acknowledged. What is integrity anyway? Here is the video shown during the assembly starring Westmount students and staff:

Westmount's Got Talent!

Westmount students and teachers are talented!

This year, we had two concerts, the first one was held in December.  On its second year, it was titled "Westmount's Got Talent Season 2".  Here's a sneak peek of the acts:

Family Potluck Dinner, Open House and Spring Concert

May 7 is a night to remember! Families came to share their food with the entire Westmount community. Parents got to sit down with their children on picnic blankets enjoying good food, siblings got to play on the lawn in front of the school, friends got to chat and bask in the good weather. The potluck, which was oranized by the Parent Council, was then proceeded with an Open House where students got to show off their work in their classrooms. The day was capped off by a concert produced by the Music Department in coordination with the entire staff. Students played different instruments and got to show their singing chops!

Canada Food Guide Radio Ads

As part of their Media Literacy class, students in the Primary Classes create simple media forms.  For example, the Grade 1/2 class created radio ads about the Canada Food Guide.  Here are the radio ads:

You can also read about how the ads were made here.

Dance A Thon for Tech

As we strive for teaching excellence and learning in the 21st century, we at Westmount come up with creative ways to meet those goals.  This year, we chose to dance our hearts away while raising funds for the technology we use in our classrooms.  With the Parent Council, teachers and students got together to support the technology development program for our school. This year's theme, Wild Thing, indeed brought out different wild things: a student came out wild wild, overgrown sunglasses, Miss Yee and Ms. Bojeczko came out as Thing One and Thing Two, Mr. Shih was Backwards Mr. Shih and some grade ones and twos came their wildest attires!  We now have 20 iPads and 30 netbooks that complement our desktops in the library.
