Principal's Message

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,

We are at the half way point of Semester 1 of another incredible school year. This year is no different than years past with students showcasing their many talents in academics, athletics, student clubs and leadership. Our four day grade 10 leadership retreat at Camp Manitou in Parry Sound was one of the best camps to date with over 200 students fully engaged in fun activities and life enriching experiences. The enthusiasm generated at camp quickly spread through our school and fostered student involvement in a variety of academic and co-curricular pursuits.

Our student athletes continue to shine in their respective sports. The fall season included successful performances by the cross-country team, the girls’ field hockey team, the boys’ volleyball teams and the girls’ basketball team. Other highlights of the semester so far include the Annual Awards reception for students in grades 9 to 11 and a beautiful commencement ceremony to honour the accomplishments of our graduating class of 2015. Students received awards for excellence in a variety of categories including Honour Roll Standing, General Proficiency, Subject Proficiency Awards, Athletics, Music and Leadership.

Making its debut at West Humber is our new Enriched MST (Math, Science and Technology) program. Fifty-six highly motivated grade 9 students secured admission in this competitive academic program by achieving high grade 8 marks and by performing well on an entrance exam. The students are doing really well and are moving through the curriculum at an accelerated rate to allow them to participate in enriching field trips, competitions and STEM-based activities.

I encourage you to continue to be involved with the education of your children. Be sure to check out our school website regularly at to look for upcoming events. One change that I wish to make you aware of is that we will be having Friday late starts throughout the school year in order for teachers to do Professional Development activities as well as for our Staff to conduct monthly staff meetings. Students will be reminded of these dates through announcements and will also be updated on the school website. Also, I encourage you to start to use the entrance at the back of our school to drop your children off in the morning to alleviate some of the traffic chaos at the front of the school. If you must drop your children off at the front entrance, please come early and avoid making left turns onto Martin Grove Road between 8:30 am and 9:30 am to help keep the traffic moving.

Everyone is also invited to join us at our next School Council meeting at 6:30 p.m. on November 24, 2015. My door is also always open for you to drop in at any time to see me about any concerns that you may wish to discuss.

Thank you in advance for your ongoing support and commitment to our school.
