Don Valley Welcomes Award Winning Author Christy Jordan-Fenton on Monday February 27th!

Christy Jordan-Fenton is the author of four award-winning children’s books about her mother-in-law’s, an Inuvialuk Elder (Margaret Pokiak-Fenton’s) time at Indian Residential School. Fatty Legs and A Stranger At Home have been added to numerous Canadian school curriculums, staged as musical productions, featured in a music video, and translated into French and Korean. Using her writings as a platform for social change, education, and awareness, Christy is passionate about fostering perspectives of decolonized thought that focus on resilience, self-empowerment, self-agency, strength, and the power of healing through stories. Jordan-Fenton herself was raised by a residential school survivor.

She is devoted to traditional ceremonies, is a proud mother, a land defender, and a Vital Voices Lead Fellow, who has lived in the US, Australia, and South Africa.

In addition to the middle school aged vaccination schedule.  As a bonus, there will also be a dental screening clinic set up.  I have attached a pdf with some more information.  Vanier -TPH Vaccination Clinic May 17th 2022.pptx (1).pdf

Grade 6 EQAO

Grade 6 Parents/Guardians,

Between the end of May and the middle of June, your child will be taking part in the provincial Assessment of Reading, Writing and Mathematics, Junior Division (Grades 6). This assessment is administered to all Grade 6 students in Ontario’s publicly funded school system by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO), an independent agency of the Government of Ontario.

This assessment includes a language and mathematics component, along with a student questionnaire and an introductory session with a sample test for students. The purpose of the introductory session is to familiarize students with the e-assessment platform and the types of assessment questions.  During the assessment, students will complete four language sessions that range from 15 to 35 minutes each, and four mathematics stages that each take about 30 minutes to complete. The administration of the stages and sessions may be spread out in the assessment window.

EQAO assessment questions are directly based on the expectations set out in The Ontario Curriculum, which is what teachers teach in the classroom every day. Therefore, your child does not need to prepare in any special way. Students will complete the assessment in their regular classrooms with their regular teachers, and are simply encouraged to do their best and show what they know.

In the fall, EQAO will share individual reports with us for all our students. Once we receive these reports, we will provide you with your child’s achievement on the assessment. Your child’s results are private and will give you an indication of his or her achievement in relation to Ontario’s provincial standard. The standard, or Level 3, represents the range from B– to B+. Meeting the standard means your child has a solid grasp of the required knowledge and skills, which is a good indication that he or she will be ready for Grade 7. The results of the assessment do not affect your child’s grades or report card in any way. They do, however, give you information about your child’s progress.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Ms. Lee or your child’s teacher.

Updated Screening Tool

As of March 21st, there is an updated version of the COVID-19 screening tool from Toronto Public Health.  Please CLICK HERE for a copy.

We look forward to working with you to keep Don Valley healthy.

Elementary Switch Form

To: All Parents/Caregivers of Elementary students,

The Elementary Switch Form is still open but after today, it will be closed.

In order to plan ahead for elementary students to switch between in-person and virtual learning for February 2022, parents/caregivers and students requesting a change must complete an Elementary Switch Form between Friday, December 3 and Friday, January 7. A form must be completed for each student requesting a switch. Parents/caregivers and students who do not wish to make a change do not need to complete a form.

If you are considering a switch, please speak with your child before submitting a Switch Form. We expect that parents/caregivers with shared decision-making responsibilities will come to an agreement before completing the form.

While we cannot guarantee that all switch requests will be met, it is our goal to accommodate as many as possible based on available programs and space (e.g. French Immersion, Extended French, Specialized Programs, Alternative Schools, other limited circumstances).

Elementary classes will reflect changes due to switches beginning on February 22, 2022

Whether you choose a switch in learning model or not, your child’s teacher or class (or school for virtual learning classes) may change due to a possible re-organization.

Updated COVID-19 Screening Questionnaire and TDSB Health Pass

As of October 7th, Toronto Public Health has revised its COVID-19 screening for students/children in childcares and JK to Grade 12 schools for use immediately.  We have provided a hardcopy for each student.  Although we know that many use the NOW app, the hardcopy is for when the app may not be working.  Note that the NOW app has also been updated.

The updates changes are the following:

  • “Anyone who is sick or has any symptoms of illness, including those not listed above (beyond the list on your Health Screening Sheet which includes: fever, cough, trouble breathing, loss of smell or taste, tired, sore muscles and joints, nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea, sore throat, runny nose, stuffy nose, abdominal/stomach pain, headache, and pink eye ), should stay home and seek assessment from their health care provider if needed."
  • "In the last 14 days has the child/student travelled outside of Canada AND been advised to quarantine per the federal quarantine requirements OR was told not to attend school/ child care?"

Here is the revised TDSB Student Health Pass that provides a clear chart outlining the 3 scenarios for when your child is ill:

  • Not Getting Tested (must stay home for 10 days and may come back on the 11th day if the child/ren's symptoms have improved),
  • Negative COVID Test (after 24 hours may return after their symptoms have started improving and after 48 hours for nausea, vomiting or diarrhea or if your child is NOT fully vaccinated, they NEED to self-isolate for 10 days from the last exposure to the person who was positive), and
  • Positive COVID Test (Let us know, the child MUST stay home for 10 days from the day their symptom started.  They can return on the 11th day). Please refer to this chart for more detailed information.
