Choices: Course Selection and Planning Guide

The Choices series is published online annually to encourage parents/guardians/caregivers and students to keep themselves informed about the opportunities available to them, both in and beyond secondary school. It is the goal of this series to provide information that will help with the decision-making process that must occur around the course selection process.

Program and course selection for September is made during the months of February to March. Course selection will take place using the myBlueprint online tool to help students build customized high school course plans including; goal setting, education planning and identifying post-secondary options.

Out of Area Attendance

Students who reside within the City of Toronto have the right to attend a school which is designated to serve their residential address. The "Find Your School" section of the website identifies the designated schools for each residential address.

Students also have the opportunity to access schools outside of the school that is designated to serve their home address by applying for Out-of-Area Admissions. Acceptance at these schools is subject to space availability and program suitability.

The procedures, conditions and timelines relating to Out-of-Area Admissions are described in the Out-of-Area Admissions Policy and the Out-of-Area Admission Operational Procedure . The TDSB will not be responsible for providing transportation for students admitted through Out-of-Area Admissions. Transportation is the responsibility of the applicant.

Each year in November, schools are classified Out-of-Area Admissions based on the space they have available for the upcoming school year.

Secondary School Information Nights

The following link provides a list of Secondary School information nights.  Grade 8 students and their parents are encouraged to attend the information night for their home school, as well as for any other schools they may be interested in attending next year.

Community Involvement Hours

Students are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of mandatory community involvement prior to graduation from high school.

  • An indication of completion will be entered on the student’s Ontario Student Transcript when the 40 hours have been submitted and approved. This is done by the high school guidance counselor.
  • School staff will discuss appropriate types of Community Involvement activities and projects with students and may offer suggestions, but the selection and management of the involvement is to be directed by the student.
  • Activities may take place inside or outside the school. If inside, activities may not be part of a credit program.
  • The student may not displace a worker who would normally have been paid to perform the same function or receive pay.
  • Community Involvement may begin in the summer after Grade 8.
