DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING

Drewry offers Deaf and Hard of Hearing students instruction in both American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English/written English.Acoustically retrofitted classrooms create an optimal, listening environment throughout the school while FM amplification systems use infrared technology to amplify and clarify speech. Students are connected to the Deaf community through community agencies, field trips invited guests.

The D/HofH program provides a protective setting that builds students self-esteem, life skills and employ-ability skills, Step-by-step instructions, visual strategies and extra time to acquire skills are the foundation of this program. The curriculum addresses both social/emotional needs, and functional life skills.

Emphasis is placed on assisting students with the transition into secondary school and acquiring fundamental literacy, numeracy and independent living skills through experiential learning opportunities both in and out of school. We help students identify their future path after leaving Drewry, either by providing co-op opportunities, connections with agencies and programs or credit courses for students planning to attend post-secondary education.

CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION

Employability skills are emphasized in all courses at Drewry.

Community Living Toronto Coordinators introduce students to mentors in the community who work in a career field of interest to the students. What a valuable networking opportunity!

Drewry offers students individual TTC and travel training opportunities with college students.

Drewry has 3 Co-op Programs: D/HH, DD and MID.   All co-op programs include placements in the community 4 days per week.

Drewry offers students pre-placement training in job applications; résumé and cover letter writing; job interview skills; health and safety training; as well as individual TTC and travel travel training (with college students).

During the placement, the co-op teacher visits regularly and ensures that appropriate learning and workplace accommodations are in place.

The co-op teacher develops a Personalized Placement Learning Plan with specific goals (e.g. social skills, literacy and numeracy) in conjunction with parents and the supervisor.

Our co-op programs are very successful in helping students develop the confidence to obtain and maintain employment in the future.
