Mathematics at Earl Haig Secondary School is about more than developing procedural skills. Our goal is to help students become confident, curious and thoughtful mathematical problem solvers who can communicate their reasoning, make connections, and approach challenging problems with perseverance.

About Intermediate Mathematics
Intermediate Mathematics at Earl Haig offers Grade 9 Destreamed Mathematics (MTH1W), Grade 10 Academic Mathematics (MPM2D), Grade 10 Applied Mathematics (MFM2P), and Grade 9 and 10 Locally Developed Mathematics (MAT1L/MAT2L).
Grade 9 Destreamed (MTH1W): Number Sense, Algebra, Linear Relations, Data, Geometry and Measurement, Financial Literacy, and Coding.
Grade 10 Academic (MPM2D): Analytic Geometry, Quadratic Relations, and Trigonometry.
Grade 10 Applied (MFM2P): Measurement and Trigonometry, Linear Relations, Quadratic Relations, and Applications of Mathematics.
About Senior Mathematics
Senior Mathematics at Earl Haig offers a range of Grade 11 and Grade 12 courses designed to develop students’ mathematical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and readiness for their chosen post-secondary pathways.
Grade 11 Functions (MCR3U): Introduction to Functions, Algebraic Expressions, Quadratic Functions, Exponential Functions, Trigonometric Functions, and Sequences and Series.
Grade 11 Functions and Applications (MCF3M): Quadratic Functions, Exponential Functions, Trigonometric Functions, and Applications of Functions.
Grade 11 Foundations for College Mathematics (MBF3C): Mathematical Models, Personal Finance, Measurement and Geometry, Trigonometry, and Data Management.
Grade 12 Advanced Functions (MHF4U): Polynomial Functions, Rational Functions, Trigonometric Functions, Exponential and Logarithmic Functions, and Combining Functions.
Grade 12 Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U): Rates of Change, Derivatives and Their Applications, Vectors, and Lines and Planes in Three-Dimensional Space.

Mathematics Contests & Enrichment
We enrich student learning through University of Waterloo Math Contests and boost engagement using a Building Thinking Classrooms pedagogical approach. We also offer in school support including Math Lunch Help, Peer Tutoring and Continuing Education after-school Numeracy.
The Earl Haig Mathematics Department encourages students to explore mathematics beyond the classroom and challenge themselves through enrichment and problem-solving opportunities.
Students in Grades 9–12 have opportunities to participate in University of Waterloo Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) contests throughout the school year. These experiences allow students to develop creative problem-solving strategies, encounter interesting mathematics beyond the regular curriculum, and connect with other students who share an interest in mathematics.

Student Support
Students are encouraged to seek help, ask questions and make use of the mathematics supports available at Earl Haig.
Math Lunch Help provides students with opportunities to receive additional assistance from mathematics teachers during lunch.
Peer Tutoring provides students with another opportunity to work with fellow students and strengthen their understanding in a supportive environment.
Math Society – Students can receive additional mathematics support and collaborate with their peers.
Extra Help by Appointment – Students are encouraged to speak with their classroom teacher to arrange a time for additional help.
