Student Success at East York
Student Success Teachers at East York help students who may be at risk of not earning
the credits required for their Ontario Secondary School Diploma. After consultation with
the student, parents/guardians, teachers and counsellors, an appropriate Student Success
initiative is recommended.
Credit Recovery
Students in Credit Recovery classes may earn credits they have previously attempted but
not completed. Usually these are Grade 9 or 10 core credits. Students work on individual
programs and proceed at their own pace. A bonus of Credit Recovery is that students may
successfully complete 2 or even 3 credits during a single semester. Teachers monitor their
progress and mark their completion of course expectations. Since 2005 East York
students have achieved over 200 credits through this individualized program.
Credit Rescue
Sometimes circumstances get in the way of school success. That’s when Credit Rescue
may be needed, in a variety of forms. Perhaps a student who has had to miss school due
to illness or family crisis needs to complete a course through an individualized program.
Or another student may need to use extra time during the exam period to complete
missing assignments. Teachers from across the school take part in this program and help
provide these catch-up opportunities for students in need.
Peer Tutoring
During Grade 9 Applied English and Math periods, our Peer Tutoring courses allow
Grade 12 students to learn about teaching. All Grade 9 Applied Math and English
students have the opportunity to work with these tutors as needed.
Tracking
All students at risk are tracked regularly by Student Success teachers. This means that
students are not overlooked if they face academic problems during the school year.
Tracking helps to ensure that students can be brought in a timely manner to the In-School
Team or Student Support Team for extra support when needed.
