The Hodgson Update

November 9, 2019

Hello Everyone,

As the weather gets colder I want to remind students that they need to dress more warmly.  On Monday we will be attending a Remembrance Day service and laying wreath at the Cenotaph at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery which is located just inside the west entrance.  All parents are welcome to join.  Please see the attached flyer with more details Poster_Nov 11 RCAF 2019 Mnt Pleasant.pdf .  The forecast is looking like we may get some snow and the temperature is going to about minus 2.  Encourage your children to dress accordingly.  Many classes have put their poppies up on the fence that faces Davisville Ave.  Please make sure to come and see our school memorial.  It is beautiful!

A note was emailed out on Friday with a link for Parent Teacher interviews coming up this Thursday and Friday.  Please follow the link to register  All parents will have the opportunity to meet with their child’s teachers.  The Staff at Hodgson Middle School are committed to the success of their students and a very large part of that starts with our connection with our parent community.  Please note: Progress Reports will be coming home on Tuesday November 12th, 2019.

Our Eco-club has put together a walk to school survey.  Please take some time to complete it.  You have until Wednesday November 13 2019 to fill out the walk to school form ( Remember this is for our planet!!! (This message was crafted and sent by the students in the Eco-club)

Since September our Fitness for Success Club has been training for an event.  In combination with Team Unbreakable, we are a part of the 4th ever 5K run at Coronation Park on November 23rd, 2019. It will take place at 9:30am. Team Unbreakable and Hodgson have been partners for 3 years and have been teaching our students the links between good physical health and correlating to good mental health.

As you are all aware the new provincial cellphone policy came into effect on Monday, November 4th.  Since this new policy aligns nicely with the current policy we have had in place at Hodgson over the last few years, minimal reminders were required for our staff and students this week.  To review our school policy please scroll down.

Our school improvement survey is still live and we are still looking for more parents to respond.  Your input is very valuable to us.  The results will be shared once all of our stakeholders have had a chance to complete each section. Part two is now live and we ask that you take a moment to complete this survey. CLICK HERE –

Stay warm as the cooler weather sets in and take some time to the outdoors.

Here is some other important information you need to know…

Bid N Brew - November 27th!

Our school Council will be hosting our annual Bid N Brew this year on November 27th at the Wallace.  Don't miss it, get your tickets via School Cash Online.

If you're able to help please find donation information here!

Donations needed for our Bid ‘n Brew Silent Auction
Parent donations and active participation in the bidding are critical to the success of our Silent Auction.
In 2018, more than 50% of the money raised was from parent donations.   Parents have asked us what can they donate? We have had the most success with:

  • Tickets for sporting events – Leafs / Raptors / Marlies
  • Restaurant, Movie Theatre and Major Retailer Gift Cards
  • Concert / Museum Tickets
  • Wine / Beer / Brewery or Wine Tasting Events

This year there will be no class baskets, however parents can still donate new items or cash. Items can be dropped off at the office and will be combined with others to make themed baskets (cooking, wine o'clock, tea time, spa day, beach party, etc.).

Communication with your children during the school day

We have a number of students connecting with parents during the school day and during instructional time.  While we encourage a healthy level of communication between parents and their children however, when that interrupts instructional time it can affect everyone in the classroom.
We ask that if you need to reach your child or your child needs to reach you that you use our office to make contact with your child.  Our office is happy to connect you with your child and conversely if your child needs to reach you we encourage them to come to the office to use their cell phone.  If you go back to our Welcome Package sent out August 28th, 2019 you will see our electronic device policy there.

Hodgson Electronic Device Policy:

  1. Make sure students are clear about our expectations.  Cell phones and personal devices are only to be used for educational purposes at the direction of the teacher.  Students wishing to call home are expected to come to the office (where they will be supervised) to use their personal device to make a call or send a text message.
  3. Progressive discipline approach:
  1. First time: Warning
  2. Second time: Give the phone to the teacher until the end of the day.
  3. Third time:  Give the phone to the teacher and call home.
  4. Repeat offenders:  Take the phone and send it to the office

Parent Concern Protocol

As many of you know, the TDSB has a Parent Concern Protocol that is designed to help parents navigate how best to express concerns that they may have at their child’s school.  You can find more information about the Parent Concern Protocol here:  At Hodgson we share the practice of being completely open to engaging with our parents and school community to address any concerns.  While you do have the Parent Concern Protocol to support you and to provide direction, please also know that you can always talk to us, call and/or email us.

Guidance at Hodgson Middle School

Our new guidance counsellor is Gary Stewart.  We are excited to have Gary as part of the Hodgson team.  Please feel free to reach out to Gary at if you have questions or concerns regarding transitions.  Please find attached the hand-out from Tuesday Night’s Choices for Nine evening. (attach here)

Student Accountability

Discrimination (bias, prejudice, hate and harassment) that is directed and related to our students is something that all staff in our school take seriously.  All students who violate “the Code”and/or TDSB policies and procedures (this information can be found in our welcome package) related to any form of discrimination will be subject to formal school discipline.  We will consult central staff when dealing with any incident we believe to be discriminatory in its origin. We aim to facilitate education, training and awareness related to discrimination for our entire school community. We will work with all parties involved to take corrective action that will assist and support everyone who has been affected by a word or action we believe to be discriminatory.  Our goals are to prevent, respond to and deal with discriminatory acts as it relates to all Human Rights and Caring and Safe Schools policies and procedures.

Reporting Your Child's Absence

If your child is going to be absent for any reason, please let the office know in advance or as soon as you can.  We use an automated system that calls parents about absences as soon as attendance is completed, which is 9:15 am for the morning and 1:15 pm for the afternoon.  The system continues to call until it reaches a parent or guardian.  You can call Sandy or Sahar at (416) 393-0390 or you can email Sandy Colyn & Sahar Boroomand (Please be sure to copy both.) You can also feel free to copy Lori ( and Kelley (

Hodgson Strings Program

Our strings program will resume on Nov. 4.  More information will follow once they come into the school.

Student Safety

We want all of our students to be conscious of their personal safety in the community.  Over the year it has been reported that our students cross in a very unsafe fashion over Davisville Ave., most particularly during the lunch hour.   Please engage your children in conversations of personal safety in and around the school community before school, during the lunch hour and afterschool.  We have asked that students make personal safety their first priority and are grateful to our parents and guardians for continuing the conversation at home.

How to Connect with Hodgson Staff

Please use our school website for the contact information of our school staff.  If the person you need to reach is not listed please call the office for an accurate email address.  All of our staff can be reached easily by email, telephone or by visiting the school (with an appointment).

Google Classroom

Our teachers and students all use Google Classroom. We have created a Google classroom for each homeroom as the one, online location for students, parents and teachers to go to get or share information, assignments and homework.
Parents can sign up to receive daily or weekly updates on what is posted to their child's Google Classroom. Simply email your child's homeroom teacher to ask that they add your email address to the classroom's notification list.  We will provide more information for you at Curriculum Night.

Our school office re-opens on Monday, August 27.  We will be registering new, in-area students on August 28, 29, and 30 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.  Please connect with to arrange a registration appointment.
