Principal's Message

Hello everyone!

Welcome back! We sincerely hope that you all had a wonderful summer filled with fond memories and good times with family and friends. We recognize that it was “a different summer”, however we are hopeful you all enjoyed the beautiful weather and time together. J To those returning to our wonderful school, welcome back! To those who are new, a sincere welcome to all of you! We hope that everyone has had pleasant adventures during the summer months. Now, it is time to get back to learning routines and school friends. I’m sure many children are excited with the anticipation of beginning a new grade with a new teacher and look forward to making new friendships. Equally, there will be some anxiousness given our current “new normal”. We will continue to work together to support each other through this time and provide the best learning opportunities both in school and virtually. Thank you all for your continued support and patience as we work through this year together.

As your principal, I am extremely excited about this upcoming school year! This year promises to be an enriching year for students, staff and our community. As a school learning community we will continue to cultivate a caring environment, develop social responsibility in our students and build community relations.

With the commitment of our strong and dedicated staff, we will also continue to strive for excellence. Students will have many opportunities to develop and grow, academically and socially. As a whole school, our foci will continue to be on Safety, Literacy (English & French), Mathematics, STEM and the Arts. We are a Growth Mindset school with a focus on “Making Our Thinking Visible”. Over the next few weeks, students’ thinking will begin to be more and more visible on our school walls. Stay tuned!

The school is ready and gleaming thanks to Mr. Walsh and Mr. Morrell - our caretaking staff. Let’s honour their hard work by making every effort to keep our school clean (non-marking shoes and litter-less lunches are some of the things you can do to help - thank you).

The teaching and support staff have all been busy bringing to life their classrooms and planning meaningful, engaging and authentic lessons. In addition we have placed directional arrows and signs throughout the school to support a safe and healthy return for all during this time of COVID-19. Although our priority has always been the safety and well-being of our students and school staff, we are equally committed to supporting and achieving high learning expectations for all. I look forward to visiting all the classrooms and discussing learning goals and success criteria with all the students as they take ownership of their learning.

A great big THANK YOU to Mrs. Kaul (our new Vice-Principal), Mrs. Austin and Mrs. Rajagopal for their efforts to ensure a smooth start to the school year - never an easy task! Class lists, bus schedules, student forms, attendance and so much more are all organized and at the ready.

Speaking of staff - we have many familiar teaching faces back and we welcome everyone! Some staff will also be teaching virtually for the foreseeable future “alongside” their colleagues at school. Regardless of where are staff is teaching, they continue to work as a teaching team to support the learning of all our students. We are so very proud to work alongside this teaching staff. Thank you HG Staff!

Finally, I want to extend a very warm welcome to everyone and best wishes for a fantastic 2020-2021 school year! We know it will be a different year, however it is the “same beautiful school” because of the students, staff and our parent community! Thank you all and we look forward to working with each other in the months ahead.
