This course extends the range of key reading, writing, oral communication, and thinking skills that students need for success in all areas of the curriculum. Students will study novels, poems, magazines, and reports, and will describe, design and produce effective media works. An important focus will be the clear and coherent use of spoken and written language.

ENG3C1 English, Grade 11, College Preparation
This course emphasizes the development of literacy, critical thinking, and communication skills. Students will study the content, form, and style of informational texts and literary works from Canada and other countries; write reports, correspondence, and persuasive essays; and analyze media forms, audiences, and media industry practices. An important focus will be on establishing appropriate voice and using business and technical language with precision and clarity.

ENG3U1 English, Grade 11, University Preparation
This course emphasizes the development of literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. Students will analyse challenging literacy texts from various periods, countries, and cultures;, as well as a range of informational and graphic texts, and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms. An important focus will be on using language with precision and clarity and incorporating stylistic devices appropriately and effectively. The course is intended to prepare students for the compulsory Grade 12 university or college preparation course.

ENG4C1 English, Grade 12, College Preparation
This course emphasizes consolidation of literacy, critical thinking, and communication skills. Students will analyse informational texts and literary works from various time periods, countries, and cultures; write research reports, summaries, and short analytical essays; complete an independent study project; and analyse the interactions among media forms, audiences, and media industry practices. An important focus will be on establishing appropriate style and using business and technical language effectively.

ENG4U1 English, Grade 12, University Preparation
This course emphasizes the consolidation of the literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. Students will analyse a range of challenging literary texts from various periods, countries, and cultures; interpret and evaluate informational and graphic texts; and create oral, written, and media texts in variety of forms. An important focus will be on using academic language coherently and confidently, selecting the reading strategies best suited to particular texts and particular purposes for reading, and developing greater control in writing. The course is intended to prepare students for university, college, or the workplace.

ELS2O1 LITERACY Skills, Grade 10, Open
This course is designed to help students strengthen essential reading and writing skills, providing them with the extra literacy support they need in order to graduate. Students will read informational, graphic, and literary texts, with a focus on locating information, identifying main ideas and supporting details, building vocabulary, and consolidating skills in the application of key comprehension strategies. The course will also help develop core learning strategies.
Prerequisite: None.
OLC401 Ontario Secondary Literacy Course, Grade 12, Open
This course emphasizes the demonstration of literacy skills and requires students to complete reading and writing assignments as well as a 30% summative evaluation. Students who pass the course are considered to have met the literacy graduation requirement.
Prerequisite: Students who have had 2 opportunities to write OSSLT and one unsuccessful attempt. (Counsellor approval needed to take course)
