School Council

School Council

What is a School Advisory Council?

School Councils are an excellent way for parents/guardians to become engaged in the school. The purpose of the Council is to improve student achievement and enhance the accountability of the education system. Through regular meetings and planned activities, Council is an important forum for involving parents/family/community members in matters that impact the education of students.

You are automatically a member of Council if you have a child enrolled at SAB in person or in virtual learning. We encourage you to participate in Council activities throughout the year.

Get involved

Subscribe to our Calendar

Use this link to subscribe to the SAB School Council Calendar, where you will find all of our council meeting dates, events, pizza lunch dates, and more.

Here are some great ways you can get involved in your school:

Role

Who

How you can impact the school

Time commitment

School Council Member at Large

Everyone. All SAB parents/guardians are automatically members-at-large on council.

You can attend council meetings, learn about how the school works, and ask about issues that are important to you, and how they are/might be supported at SAB.

None, or as interested

Volunteer

Any parent, guardian, caregiver, or community member can sign up for volunteer opportunities throughout the year.

A valid police check is required for in-school volunteering.

When kids see their caregivers get involved in their school, it helps send the message that school is important, it is a safe place and I belong here.

Volunteer options are endless, and work with multiple schedules, and don’t have to be during school hours or even in the building.

For example:

At school: serve pizza on pizza day, in-class reading support, Kiss and Ride program, sports teams

Events: dance/BBQ/event volunteer, leading or helping a fundraiser or event

Out of school: researching or planning speakers or author visits, exploring fundraising vendors, putting up posters, costco run for supplies, fundraiser deliveries

As much or a little as you want.

There are options for volunteering for single events one-time, for a short project like planning a fundraiser or event, or on a consistent schedule.

School Council Voting Member

SAB parents/ guardians can self-nominate and run for council voting positions.

These are formal roles with a stronger voice on School Council, with voting privileges on initiatives, priorities, fundraising and how funds are spent. There are 13 voting positions available for parents/guardians for a one-year term. Self-nominations are due in early September. Elections are held at our first Council meeting of the year in September.

1.5hrs/month for monthly meetings
+ responsibilities of role

 Police Check / Attestation

Police check / attestation - Valid police check on file required for in-school volunteering with students. While it can take a while for first timers, volunteers are always welcome for outside of school items (e.g. researching and helping with a fundraiser, shopping / pickup for an event, designing flyers, etc)
