The Benefits of Outdoor Play and Movement
As the weather gets warmer, April is a great time for children to spend more time outdoors and stay active. Physical activity is important not just for the body, but also for the mind. Moving our bodies helps improve mood, reduce stress, and increase focus. Outdoor play also gives children a chance to explore, be creative, and take a break from screens. Even small amounts of fresh air and movement each day can make a big difference in a child’s overall well-being.
Tips for Home:
Primary (K–3) Tips:
- Spend time outside each day, even if it’s just 15–20 minutes.
- Visit a local park, go for a short walk, or play simple games like tag or catch.
- Encourage free play; running, jumping, and exploring help build strong bodies and minds.
- Dress for the weather so children can enjoy outdoor time comfortably.
Junior (Gr. 4–6) Tips:
- Encourage your child to be active for at least 30–60 minutes a day.
- Suggest activities like biking, playing sports, or going for family walks.
- Limit screen time and replace it with outdoor or active choices when possible.
- Talk about how movement helps their mood, energy, and focus.
Staying active helps children feel happier, healthier, and more ready to learn. Let’s take advantage of the warmer weather and get moving together!
