Promotion, Transfer and Retention

AT CR Marchant, we follow the TDSB Promotion, Transfer and Retention Policy when placing students in classes. 

Grade 6 to 7- PROMOTION

  • A student has met the curriculum expectations of the current grade and has achieved an average equivalent to Level 1, or higher in English, Mathematics, AND in at least two thirds of the remaining subjects.The student will be promoted from the current grade to the next grade.
  • A student with ESL/ELD needs who meet the requirements of the modified program will be promoted.
  • A student who is Exceptional and has met the modified curriculum expectations of his/her IEP, will be promoted
  • A student who is Exceptional (for whom the integrity of the curriculum expectations for the current grade has been maintained), will be promoted from the current grade to the next.

Grade 6 to 7-TRANSFER

  • A student is transferred when he/she has not achieved Level 1 in English / French (Extended or Immersion) or Mathematics OR A student is transferred when he/she has not achieved Level 1 in at least two thirds of remaining subjects.The student is transferred from the current grade to the next grade.
  • ESL/ELD students who have not met their expectations of a program that has been modified to meet their needs (i.e.: Expectations based on the ESL/ESD program, not the grade level program) are transferred from the current grade to the next grade.
  • Transfer of Students with a modified IEP: The student has not met the modified curriculum expectations of the IEP and has not achieved a Level 1 in Language/French, or mathematics or has not achieved a Level 1 in at least two thirds of the remaining subjects.  

Grade 7 to 8- PROMOTION

  •  A student has met the curriculum expectations of the Grade 7 subjects and has achieved an average equivalent to Level 1, or higher in English, Mathematics, French, Geography, History and Science and Technology AND the student has achieved an average equivalent to Level 1 or higher across all Grade 7 subjects.The student is promoted from grade 7 to grade 8.
  • A student with ESL/ELD needs who meet the requirements of the modified program will be promoted.
  • A student who is Exceptional and has met the modified curriculum expectations of his/her IEP, will be promoted
  • A student who is Exceptional (for whom the integrity of the curriculum expectations for the current grade has been maintained), will be promoted from the current grade to the next.

Grade 7 to 8- TRANSFER 

  • A student is transferred when he/she has not achieved Level 1 in one of the following subjects:English, Mathematics, French, Geography, History or Science and Technology OR A student is transferred when he/she has not achieved an average equivalent to at least Level 1 across all Grade 7 subjects.The student is transferred from grade 7 to grade 8.
  • ESL/ELD students who have not met their expectations of a program that has been modified to meet their needs (i.e.: Expectations based on the ESL/ESD program, not the grade level program) are transferred from the current grade to the next grade.
  • Transfer of Students with a modified IEP: The student has not met the modified curriculum expectations of the IEP and has not achieved an average equivalent to a Level 1, or has not achieved a minimum Level 1 in any one of the following subjects: Language, French (core), Math, Science, History, Geography or History.

Grade 8 to 9-PROMOTION

  • A student has met the curriculum expectations of the Grade 8 subjects and has achieved an average equivalent to Level 1 or higher across all subjects taken AND a minimum of Level 1 or higher in English, French, Geography, Mathematics and Science.The student is promoted from grade 8 to grade 9.
  • A student with ESL/ELD needs who meet the requirements of the modified program will be promoted.
  • A student who is Exceptional and has met the modified curriculum expectations of his/her IEP, will be promoted
  • A student who is Exceptional (for whom the integrity of the curriculum expectations for the current grade has been maintained), will be promoted from the current grade to the next.

 

Grade 8 to 9-TRANSFER

  • The student has not met the curriculum expectations of the Grade 8 subjects and has not achieved an average equivalent to a minimum of Level 1 across all subjects taken OR has not achieved a minimum of Level 1 in one of the following subjects: English, French, Geography, History, Mathematics and Science.The student will be transferred from grade 8 to grade 9.
  • ESL/ELD students who have not met their expectations of a program that has been modified to meet their needs (i.e.: Expectations based on the ESL/ESD program, not the grade level program) are transferred from the current grade to the next grade.
  • Transfer of Students with a modified IEP: The student has not met the modified curriculum expectations of the IEP and has not achieved an average equivalent to a Level 1, or has not achieved a minimum Level 1 in any one of the following subjects: Language, French (core), Math, Science, History, Geography or History.

Grade 6, 8, and 8 RETENTION

A student may be retained only after all alternatives are exhausted and only in exceptional circumstances. A student is retained when he/she has not successfully completed the curriculum expectations of the grade 8 subjects at a Level 1 in English, French, Mathematics, Geography and Science AND has not achieved an average equivalent to Level 1 across all grade 8 subjects.
