French Immersion

Many French Immersion Programs exist. Jackman is a host school for the Early French Immersion Program for the Jackman and Wilkinson catchment areas. Application forms for Early French Immersion are available in early January.

French Immersion Programs

The Toronto District School Board offers both an Early French Immersion Program and a Middle French Immersion program. The French Immersion programs are designed for students who do not speak French at home. The application process for Early Immersion is completed on-line.  It is important to check the TDSB website, or inquire at the Jackman office, for the cut-off date for receipt of applications.

The application process for Middle Immersion is completed on-line. Middle Immersion is offered at other school locations. To locate the Middle French Immersion school in your area, you must first confirm the English school for your home address. Then click on Programs, French As a Second Language, Search by English School Name. All FSL programs for the address will be indicated. Immersion - Grade 7 Continuation Program

In the middle school years, Grades 6,7,8, the Early French Immersion program is a half day program. 50% of the day is in French and 50% of the day is in English. There are 23 schools across the TDSB that offer the continuation of the French Immersion Program at the middle school level. Access to the middle level program is offered through designated pathways from the junior schools. For more information, call Alison Pearce, Program Co-ordinator, French As a Second Language at (416) 394-6806.

Early Immersion Program

The Early Immersion Program begins only in Senior Kindergarten. It offers 100% French instruction in the classroom until the end of Grade 3. All subjects are taught in French.
English instruction is gradually introduced beginning in Grade 4 until it becomes a half-day program from Grades 6-8.
Designated school pathways have been developed to ensure that students have a continuation of program from the SK entry to the end of Grade 12.
There are 41 schools across the TDSB that offer entry to the Early French Immersion program in Senior Kindergarten.
The attendance area for an Early French Immersion program is created by a group of "associated" English feeder schools. To locate the Early French Immersion school in your area, you must first confirm the English school for your home address. Then click on Programs, French As a Second Language, Search by English School Name. All FSL programs for the address will be indicated. Secondary Immersion Program

The French Immersion program continues at the secondary level for Grade 9-Grade 12.
Students who successfully complete the sequence of 4 French courses in French Immersion and a minimum of 6 courses in other subjects where French is the language of instruction, for a total of 10 credits, are eligible for a Certificate of Bilingual Studies in French Immersion from the TDSB.
The TDSB also offers an Honours Certificate of Bilingual Studies in French Immersion for students who obtain 11 or more credits in French instruction. There are 10 schools across the TDSB that offer secondary school Immersion programs. They are:

Agincourt CI

Cedarbrae CI
