Jackman Community Daycare History

Jackman Community Daycare opened its doors in 1984. For over 25 years our non-profit childcare centre has been an integral part of the school community. Located in Jackman Public School, we are licensed to provide care for 170 children ages 4-12. During the school year a Nursery School program gives twenty-four 3-year-olds a head start to their Jackman school experience.

The daycare employs 8 full-time staff and over 10 part-time employees. Thirteen staff members have earned their ECE diploma and are members of the College of Early Childhood Educators.

Full-time child care runs from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 6. Our hours of operation are 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM Monday through Friday. Our Nursery School program runs from 9:15-11:15 AM during the school year and is for 3-year-olds.

Jackman Community Daycare Philosophy

Jackman Community Daycare provides a positive learning environment for children that enhances their personal level of development. Through play experiences and guidance by specially trained Staff, the children are exposed to situations that will stimulate:
- communication and social skills through child-child and adult-child interactions
- fine motor development
- gross motor development through physical activity and outdoor play
- self esteem and decision-making capabilities
- social/emotional skills
- curiosity, initiative and independence

Children are guided by skilled staff who establish a flexible program in an inclusive, supportive, and non-discriminatory environment. Children’s ideas are the crux of the emergent curriculum that is based on the interests and needs of the children. Open communication between and among Staff, children, families and the school community is crucial to realizing a warm and safe environment in which the children at Jackman Community Daycare can play, learn and thrive.

Our 7 Program Offerings

We have 7 distinct programs serving children 3-12 years of age. The Board of Directors
reserves the right to change the room offerings based on the needs of the Daycare.

Nursery School (extension 223)

The nursery school program runs during the school year from 9:15 to 11:15 am. This program is designed for 3-year-old children who will be entering Jackman School's Kindergarten program the following year. There are 16 children in this program per day using Room 105.
The Nursery School program does not operate on any Toronto District School Board (TDSB) declared holidays, P.A. Days, March Break, or during the summer.

JK/SK (Kindergarten) (extension 222)

We currently have facilities to enroll 24 children in Junior and Senior Kindergarten in Room 107. Care is provided for this group before school, during lunchtime and after school. All JK/SK children are served a hot lunch, which is provided by a catering service. As well, a nutritious snack is served in the morning and after school. Depending on the needs of the school, your child may be assigned either morning or afternoon kindergarten. Currently all of the JK/SK children attend kindergarten in the afternoon.

School Age (extension 223)

We enroll 30 children in Grades 1 and 2 in Room 105. Care is provided for this group before school, during lunchtime and after school. These children have the option of bringing their own lunch from home or receiving our hot lunch program, which is provided by a catering service for an additional fee. If the children bring their own lunch, we have a microwave to heat items. A nutritious snack is served to the children after school.

A.C.C. (After Class Club) (extension 224)

We enrol 30 children in Grades 3 and 4 in Room 101. Care is provided for this group before school, during lunchtime and after school. These children have the option of bringing their own lunch from home or receiving our hot lunch program, which is provided by a catering service for an additional fee. If the children bring their own lunch, we have a microwave to heat items. A nutritious snack is served after school.

10+ (extension 225)

We enrol 30 children in Grades 5 and 6, in Rooms 309. Our 10+ program is offered before school in Room 101 and after school in Room 309. These children eat their lunch in the GPR with their classmates. A nutritious snack is served after school.

Jackmanators – Room 108 (extension 228)

We currently enroll 15 children in Grades 1 & 2 in Room 108. Care is provided for this group
before school in Room 105 and after school in Room 108. Because we share this room with the school, we are unable to provide care at lunch. Children will eat with the school in the GPR. A nutritious snack is served to the children after school.

All Stars – Room 207 (extension 227)

We currently enroll 28 children in Grades 3 & 4 in Room 207. Care is provided for this group before school in Room 101 and after school in Room 207. Because we share this room with the school, we are unable to provide care at lunch. Children will eat with the school in the GPR. A nutritious snack is served to the children after school.

Volunteering

Parents are welcome to join their child any time in program. If you would like to volunteer on a trip please inform the staff in advance and you may be able to participate depending on the trip and if space allows. All participating parents, volunteers and students who are regularly in the program or regularly volunteering on trips will participate in an orientation and training session. They are required to read, understand abide by the Daycare’s Volunteer Policy. A copy of this policy is posted outside of Room 105 and is available in the daycare office.

Jackman Community Daycare is committed to providing a high quality, safe and secure environment for all children enrolled in our programs. The safety and well-being of children are our highest priorities. We adhere to the provincial requirements for daycares which maintain that for the safety and security of all children, parents are not permitted to have direct access to any children other than their own (i.e. parents will not be allowed to take children other than their own to the bathroom).

The Admissions Process

While anyone may fill out the applications to attend Jackman Community Daycare, a child must reside in the Jackman School District to be considered for registration. In addition, children admitted to the Daycare must be registered at and attend Jackman School.

Daycare Applications (50K 11/1/2010) and Nursery School Applications (49K 11/1/2010) can be downloaded or picked up outside of Room 107.

When an application is completed and returned to the Daycare and the $20 application fee is paid, the application is filed in the appropriate program binder in the Daycare Office. Children’s names are grouped by the year they were born and new applications are placed at the back of each binder.

Enrollment in Daycare programs is open to children 3.5 years of age through Grade 6. Admissions are based on the current waiting list. There is no priority given to siblings. Junior Kindergarten registration usually takes place in April, with a start date of July 1st. Families are called in the order in which their child’s application appears on the waiting list. The children are moved up to the next room based on their grade in school.

A non-refundable registration fee of $50.00 is required at the time of acceptance. Parents must also provide 2 pieces of proof that they do, in fact, live in Jackman’s catchment area before their child can be admitted. In addition, post-dated cheques and all forms, including medical and emergency information forms, must be submitted during the registration process.

Daycare Waiting List Procedures

We strongly encourage anyone who thinks their child may in the future need a space in our Daycare to fill out an application and put their child's name on the waiting list. Most families put their child's name on our waiting list many years in advance, often right after birth. There is a $20 dollar application fee, payable at the time of application. This fee is waived for families on subsidy or reimbursed to families on subsidy on the date their child is offered a spot in the daycare. To apply for subsidy, contact the City of Toronto’s Children’s Services division by calling 311 or going to their website at www.toronto.ca/children

The Daycare management believes that strict adherence to a first-come, first-served policy is the only fair and equitable process.

Please note that because the demand for Daycare spaces is generally greater than the number of spaces available, we maintain a waiting list for each birth year. There are separate applications and procedures for the Nursery School program and the Daycare programs.

There is a $20 non-refundable administration fee to stay on the waiting list after declining a Daycare spot. If a family declines to accept a spot when offered, but wishes to keep their child's application on the waiting list, a $20 administration fee will be charged and their application will be placed at the bottom of the list. If the administration fee is not received within 15 days of the spot being declined, the child's application will be taken off the list and it will be up to the family to submit a new application. From time to time the Director may request the Board of Directors of Jackman Community Daycare to approve an exception to the policy for programming needs or unforeseen circumstances.
