Student Code of Conduct

All members of the Central Tech School community are expected to follow the CTS Code of Conduct, along with the TDSB Code of Conduct and Online Code of Conduct.  Please refer to pages 28 and 29 for the Chart of Consequences and Code of Conduct. 

 

The Central Tech School community aims to educate students in an atmosphere which fosters academic excellence and maximizes the development of the whole student as an individual. All members of the Central Tech Community - students, parents/guardians, teaching and non-teaching  staff, are expected  to work together in the spirit of mutual respect and cooperation. 

 

Respect for Self and Others
 

Respect and personal responsibility set the foundation for a positive learning environment focused on purpose and learning.  All members of the school community will: 

  • work together to create a positive learning environment in each classroom 
  • respect the cultural diversity of all members of the school community 
  • respect the classroom rules and expectations set by teachers 
  • demonstrate respect for others in actions and words; 
  • not tolerate harassment that violates a person's human rights (race, gender, culture, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, ability/ disability, socio-economic status, language) 
  • not use profane or improper language; it is not acceptable 
  • comply with the established TDSB  "On-Line Code of Conduct" 

 

Respect for the Classroom Environment
 

Students will focus on their academic success by: 

  • being on time and in class everyday 
  • coming prepared for class and actively participating in the class 
  • taking responsibility for all assignments & assessments / evaluations 
  • submitting work on time and being responsible for missed work
     

Respect for the School Environment
 

Students will: 

  • keep the whole school clean by disposing of litter in garbage cans 
  • respect all school spaces by not vandalizing or marking spaces in any way 
  • conduct themselves at all school events including assemblies and special events with order and dignity 
  • spectators at athletic events are expected to remain in designated areas and remember that their behaviour must reflect creditably on the school
     

Respect for the Community
 

Students will: 

  • represent the school well when they are in the school community, especially at lunch; know that their actions and words affect the reputation of the school in our community 
  • represent Central Tech School as school ambassadors on all school field trips, athletic events, excursions and other events in the community 

 

Maintaining a Safe and Caring School Community
 

It is expected that Central Tech will be a safe and healthy environment for all members of the community. Students must accept that: 

  • Fire drills, lockdown and hold & secure drills must be followed precisely. 
  • On-line bullying and harassment of any form is inappropriate and will not be tolerated. 
  • Running, pushing, rough-housing are unacceptable and often cause injury. 
  • Rollerblades, bicycles, skateboards and scooters are not to be used in the school. 
  • Students should not be in the school after 4:00 p.m. unless they are participating in a supervised activity. 
  • Snow should remain on the ground and not be thrown at people or vehicles. 
  • In an emergency - students will take direction from school staff. 
  • For your own safety, students should inform the Office of any medical conditions, such as allergies, diabetes, etc. 
  • Students are expected to identify themselves when asked by any staff member 
  • Students should not invite any person who is not a CTS student onto school premises.  If a non-CTS student wishes to enter the school, they should call to make an appointment 416-393-0070 and sign-in the main office, room 202. 
  • CTS students should not enter another school during the school day, unless it is a sanctioned school event i.e. a scheduled team game. 
  • Students are not to enter another they do not belong to.  

 

Illegal Behaviour 

  • The use of drugs and alcohol is unacceptable and illegal. 
  • Smoking/vaping is not permitted anywhere on school property including the school grounds and may lead to suspension and/or fine. 
  • Physical assault, bullying and harassment are illegal and may lead to criminal charges and/or exclusion (see the TDSB Safe and Caring Schools Policies and Procedures). 
  • Sexual harassment, misconduct and/or assault is illegal.  
  • The presence of dangerous items at school is unacceptable and illegal. Such items include weapons and replica/imitation weapons, laser pointers, etc. The presence of dangerous items at school is unacceptable and illegal.  
  • The Police must be notified when illegal activities occur either at school or outside of school in a manner that affects the safety and well-being of a member of the school community. 

 

VIOLATION OF THE CODE OF CONDUCT
 

If a student does not demonstrate the appropriate respect for self or for the community and is neglectful of responsibilities, the following may occur: 

  • The staff member will remind the student of school expectations. 
  • The student may be referred to the Principal or Vice-Principal. 
  • Parent/guardian may be contacted by the teacher or Administration to discuss the inappropriate behaviour and subsequent consequences. 
  • Consequences may include: withdrawal from class and/or extra-curricular activities, suspension, transfer to another school, expulsion. 

 

Restrictions to Personal Mobile Device Use: 

 All members of the school community must not use personal mobile devices during instructional time except under the following circumstances:  for educational purposes, as directed by an educator and/or school staff (e.g., Principals, Vice-Principals, Child Youth Worker, Early Childhood Worker, Professional Support Services Staff); for health and medical purposes; to support special education needs. 

 

Grades 7 to 12 TDSB students’ personal mobile devices are to be stored out of view and powered off or set to silent mode during instructional time, except when their use is explicitly permitted by the educator and/or school staff (e.g., Principals, Vice-Principals, Child Youth Worker, Early Childhood Worker, Professional Support Services Staff) under the circumstances outlined above. o If the educator and/or school staff (e.g., Principals, Vice-Principals, Child Youth Worker, Early Childhood Worker, Professional Support Services Staff) sees a personal mobile device that is not stored out of view, they will require the device be handed in for the instructional period and the device must be placed, by the student, in a storage area in a location in the classroom designated by the educator and/or school staff (e.g., Principals, Vice Principals, Child Youth Worker, Early Childhood Worker, Professional Support Services Staff).  

 

As per Ministry of Education directions under PPM 128, “the student is responsible for their personal mobile device, how they use it and Operational Procedure PR585: Board Code of Conduct Page 8 of 19 G02(R: Secretariat\Staff\G02\03\OP\PR585)sec.1530 the consequences of not following the Board’s Code of Conduct on personal mobile device use”.  

 

If the student does not hand in their personal mobile device when required, they must be sent to the Principal’s office. Principals have discretion under PPM No. 145, Progressive Discipline and Promoting Positive Student Behaviour and the Promoting Positive School Climate Procedure (PR697) to consider a range of responses to address this behaviour up to and including suspension
