This course emphasizes knowledge and skills related to the craft of writing. Students analyse models of effective writing; use a workshop approach to produce a range of works; identify and use techniques required for specialized forms of writing; and identify effective ways to improve the quality of their writing. They also complete a major project as part of a creative independent study project. Our young and talented writers embark on a yearly cross curricular endeavour with the grade 12 media students; future screen-writers collaborated on movie scripts which they then see brought to the screen  by the aspiring move makers from the IDC (grade 12) course, and later on in the year screened at the Richview Film Festival.

As part of the Writer's Craft class, students get a taste of published life as they write, publish and sell their writing in a variety of formats: ‘zines, newspapers and or poetry collections. Students in the writing course are also been instrumental in the continued growth of our online newspaper the Richview Herald, and contribute articles as well as editing mastery to the student run paper.  Parents can check out the latest school happenings and newest student submissions at http://richviewherald.com/.
