Imagine @ Your Library…

Welcome to the Seneca Hill Public School Library Learning Commons. We have a wide variety of books, print materials, periodicals, graphic novels and technology, including internet/intranet access. You will find materials that reflect the diversity of our society, works by Canadian authors and illustrators, and materials to support all of the Ontario curriculum topics, from Kindergarten to grade six, at a variety of reading levels. Dual language materials are also available. Many exciting programs, presentations and events take place in the library learning commons, before, during and after the school day. Come in and be inspired!

Library Program

During library visits, students are given instruction in locating and evaluating information using the library catalogue, on-line databases, on-line encyclopedias,  internet directories, and websites on the virtual library.  We explore characteristics of different media forms, make reading recommendations, and share work in a wide range of genres, by various authors. On occasion, we enjoy the opportunity to attend a presentation and chat with a professional author, storyteller or illustrator. Students also have a voice in library acquisitions by making requests for specific materials they would like to see added to our collection.

Library Helpers

We are very proud to have many grade six students who take an active role in contributing to the success of Seneca Hill programs and activities. Early in September, students applied for the position of library helper and attended training sessions. Responsibilities include shelving books, making reading recommendations, introducing speakers, greeting visitors, taking photographs, contributing to the website, and assisting younger students with technology, to name just a few. Throughout the year, library helpers also serve as positive role models.

Reading Clubs

At Seneca Hill, students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of reading clubs which take place during recess and/or the lunch hour.  Students in grades 3 & 4 will read books nominated for the Silver Birch Express award. Those in grades 5 & 6 may participate in either the Silver Birch Fiction, or the Silver Birch Non-fiction club, or both.  All participants must attend readings for a minimum of 5 books nominated for an award, participate in discussions and activities, and finally, cast a vote for their favourite book.
