Community Involvement Hours: What You Need to Know

  • Please be sure to get pre-approval for your community volunteer activities from your guidance counsellor. 
     
  • Use the TDSB Community Involvement Form to record your hours for each school year. 
     
  • Students must submit their completed TDSB Community Involvement Form to [email protected] by the end of each school year so that hours for that school year can be recorded in a timely manner.

As part of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) requirements, all students must complete 40 hours of community involvement activities before graduation. These activities can take place in nonprofit organizations, public sector institutions, or local businesses, as long as they provide a genuine contribution to the community and do not replace a paid worker. The purpose of this requirement is to help students develop civic awareness and a sense of the positive impact they can have in supporting and strengthening their communities.

Eligible activities must be designed to be of benefit to the community and/or support a not-for-profit agency, institution, or foundation that conforms to the ethical standards of the Toronto District School Board and the Ontario Ministry of Education.

The Ministry of Education has developed a list of activities that may NOT be chosen as community involvement activities and that are therefore ineligible activities.  Please see the TDSB Community Involvement Form for more details.

All community hours must be obtained outside of regular class instructional time.

Hours can be completed at any time after a student graduates from Grade 8, including during the summer months.
