In the early beginnings of VSS, during a particularly stormy night, lightning struck one of our servers and a digital entity emerged from our data streams - a brilliant, thoughtful cyber spider. She was a curious creature, and she watched carefully as our virtual community came together. 
 

She noticed that even with all the available technology, students needed something more.  Things felt a little disconnected. Students would all log in, do their work, and log off. They were like individual stars, but they were not yet connected as a solar system.
 

She understood that success and personal growth did not happen in a vacuum, but thrived through deep, meaningful connection. So, she began to weave.
 

Her webs were not made of silk, but of resilient code, built to ensure these important connections were made. Every thread was symbolic of the connections that students, teachers, and the entire VSS community had made. 
 

As we watched her work, her kindness and care inspired us.  She wasn't a glitch in the system; she felt more like a feature that had been missing all along.  She simply started showing up in the quiet corners of our learning platforms. If you felt stuck on a math problem, you might find a thread leading you to a study guide another teacher had made. If you were feeling alone, you might discover a thread connecting you to a VSS club you would love. 
 

She worked to bridge the distance among us, and created spaces of belonging where people could learn, share, and grow - together.  Her webs became a living map of all the ways we could help each other, creating spaces where kindness and teamwork naturally grew. Through her gentle, guiding art, she wove connections straight to our heart.
 

We realized she was the perfect embodiment of our school motto, Thriving Through Connection. She showed us that learning is not just about what you know on your own, but about what we can achieve together through courage and strong school spirit.  We all agreed that she would be the perfect mascot to represent our school.  We named her Nexus, Latin for “connection” or “link”. 
 

Nexus is with us in every classroom, every interaction, every high, and every low.  She sits with us patiently, supporting us as we navigate our way through learning.  She has taught us that true strength comes from being connected, not standing alone.  

Nexus is the reason our school does not just feel like a website, but a true home where everyone is welcome.  She reminds us that learning is more meaningful together and that thriving is more possible through connection.
