How to Apply to VSS

Students can apply to Virtual Secondary School through TDSB's Out-of-Area Admissions process.  Click here for timelines, deadlines, and more information.

Please note that the TDSB's Out-of-Area Admissions process is managed centrally through the TDSB and not by Virtual Secondary School.

The following is a list of protocols and expectations for students attending Virtual Secondary School (VSS).  Please read this information carefully before submitting your application to attend Virtual Secondary School.

Remote Learning Expectations for VSS:

  • Students must live in Ontario during the school year (September – June). Students will be demitted from VSS effective the date they (and/or their parents/caregivers) are no longer residents of Ontario.  There are no exceptions.

  • Students who will be absent from school for more than three days must contact the school and complete the VSS Extended Absence form (for an absence of a maximum of 3 weeks).  As per Ministry policy, students who are absent for more than 15 consecutive days will be demitted.
  • Students must have consistent access to internet service at home.
  • Students must have a working device with a working camera and microphone. Students must always keep their cameras on during instructional time.
  • If a student’s device needs to be repaired/replaced, the student or parent/caregiver must exchange the device at the VSS Main Office located within Central Technical School, 725 Bathurst Street.  Students and/or parents/caregivers may be required to pay for the repair costs of their TDSB device.
  • VSS uses GoGuardian. Students must use their Google Chrome account when logged into their classes.
  • Email is the primary form of communication for VSS. Students and parents/caregivers are responsible for regularly checking their email for school communication.
  • Parents/caregivers should not interrupt live classes to speak with the teacher. Parents/caregivers should email the teacher to schedule an appointment outside of class hours.
  • Students and parents/caregivers must review the student’s course outlines for all courses each semester.
  • Students and parents/caregivers are responsible for reviewing the VSS Student and Parent/Caregiver Handbook to understand school policies and procedures. Parents/caregivers should contact the school if they have any questions.
  • As directed by the Ministry of Education, final student grades will reflect attendance and participation, recognizing the important role that consistent classroom engagement plays in student achievement.
  • VSS follows a remote, synchronous learning model. Asynchronous learning options are not available. Teachers cannot mark the work submitted by students who are not attending their class. VSS cannot award credits to students who are not demonstrating their attendance and engagement in class. Students who are experiencing challenges with attendance must contact their Vice Principal and guidance counsellor to create a plan.
  • All final exams in each semester will be written in person at Central Technical School.  We will not be able to accommodate requests for students to write their final exams at other TDSB schools or schools within other school boards.
  • All required Ministry of Education assessments, including the EQAO Grade 9 Math Assessment, the Financial Literacy Graduation Requirement (for students who began Grade 9 in the 2025–2026 school year or later), and the Grade 10 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) will be written in person at Central Technical School, 725 Bathurst Street. There are no virtual options for these assessments.
  • VSS students must demonstrate their engagement in VSS classes by:
    • participating in class and group activities/work using their microphone, the chat and camera;
    • completing school homework/assignments and assessments/evaluations in a timely manner via the Brightspace Learning Environment; and
    • fully engaging in student-teacher conferences.

Important notes:

  • VSS follows a remote synchronous (live, interactive) learning model.  Asynchronous learning options are not available.  
  • VSS follows the same daily school schedule as all TDSB schools. The school day starts at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 3:15 p.m.
  • VSS has two ISP programs: the Developmental Disabilities ISP and Mild Intellectual Disability ISP. A placement in either of these ISPs can only be arranged through our Central Special Education staff
  • Students transferring to VSS and who were registered at a Specialized Program or an Intensive French Language Program (i.e. Extended French, French Immersion etc.) will be removed from that program when they register at VSS.  If they decide to return to in-person learning at a later date, they will be required to return to their designated school by address unless they were previously enrolled and attended a TDSB secondary school through the Out-of-Area Admissions procedure.  Please click here for more information on the TDSB’s Out-of-Area Admissions procedures.
  • All COOP placements are virtual.  There are no in-person COOP opportunities available.
  • Only Core French is available at VSS. 
  • Students registered at VSS cannot participate in TDSB sports with their home school by address/former home school. 
  • Students in a graduating position will graduate from VSS, not their former school.
