ORANGE SHIRT DAY
Students and staff from R H King Academy invited local media outlets to join us on Monday Sept 30th as we honoured the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. On this day, students from NBE3U (Grade 11 English: Understanding Contemporary First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Voices) classes set up a variety of activities and displays for the whole school, including:

  • Banners and posters centering calls to action that students have selected.
  • An activity where students can fill out what truth and reconciliation means to them on orange squares that will be assembled to form one large shirt.
  • Pamphlets with calls to action to share with other students, as well as pamphlets outlining the many strengths and achievements of Indigenous women and the challenges they face.
  • Buttons with unique designs to share with other students.
  • An invitation to junior classes to meet one-on-one with current NBE3U students to discuss the calls to action, and what has been and still needs to be done.

The NBE3U course explores the themes, forms and stylistic elements of literary, informational, graphic, oral, cultural and media text forms emerging from First Nations, Métis, and Inuit cultures in Canada, and also looks at perspectives and influences of texts that relate to those cultures.

Our students were invited to wear Orange clothing and engage with the above opportunities to listen, learn and reflect on how we can take action on the calls to action.  To learn more about the reasons that Orange shirts are worn on September 30th, please see this video about Phyllis Webstad’s story -  Phyllis Webstad - On Orange Shirt Day.
