Homework Policy

The research on homework indicates that some regular work at home can increase student achievement. However, the research also suggests that for primary students in Grade 1 to Grade 3, the effect of homework on achievement is negligible and that the positive effect of homework on achievement increases only as the age of the child increases. Children from Grade 4 through high school benefit the most from homework.  Doing your homework is an important part of schoolwork. There are four types of assigned homework. Each type has a different purpose.

  •         Completing work not finished at school.
  •         Practicing new skills learned during the day.
  •         Preparation work for upcoming lessons.
  •         Extension activities that expand concepts or skills.

Most homework will take the form of reading, playing games or having discussions with family members. In the late Primary or Junior grades, homework may become more independent. Homework will not be assigned to students who are going away for an extended period. (e.g., a trip to another country)
